When I try to run media player I get an error that it isn't installed correctly and it asks me if i want to reinstall from microsoft's web site. if i reinstall, during the setup i get the exact same error again, I have tried installing both 9 and 10 and neither have worked.

try downloading software to remove it forcably using a tool such as advanced uninstaller pro 6.7 from this site
http://www.innovative-sol.
you can dload a 30 day trial version, which is all you will need an...first try to uninstall it using that, if that doesnt work, try to force removal. then run registry cleaner on advanced uninstaller pro, and delete temporary files (this can all be done with this tool) and try installing it again
or you could switch to a different player. musicmatch seems to be a favorite, realplayer is good, i personally use Media Jukebox 8.0 which you can download from: http://www.musicex.com/med
hope this helps

Try removing it alltogether first, via Add/Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components
