Finding Windows XP Serial off crashed computer

Hi i'm reloading a clients machine with a legit copy of Windows XP and they have since lost the serial, is there anyway to retrieve the serial key off the old data, as the hard drive is still in perfectly working order.  Otherwise is there anything I can copy over from the old data, to give them the same serial key validity.
I know there are programs around like viewkeyxp to retrieve the serial from the registry on a current running windows xp installation but I need their specific key obviously so is there a way to do it for instance by using Registry Editor and loading the hive files from the backup folder into a working Windows XP machine and locate the serial manually maybe?
