The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

Can't boot normally OR in to Safe mode

When atempting to boot in to XP Pro, the XP logo appears for about 15 seconds, then continues to boot, but then flashes a blue "stop" screen, then reboots. When attempting to boot in to Safe Mode, it never completes and then just reboots.

I'm asssuming it's software, and not a hardware issue, as I installed XP on another hard drive that I temporarily swapped out in the system, and it works ok.

I can get to the Recovery Console, (and have DOS experience) but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of things to do, other than disable all of the services. I'm not sure if that's prudent, as there are quite a few, and I'm sure the system probably won't boot with all of them disabled anyway.

I'd like to think that if I could get in to the start-up folder and/or the "start up" tab of MSCONFIG somehow, I might find the offender that's causing the system grief, but that doesn't seem to be possible.

One thing that I can try is Microsoft knowledge base Article ID : 307545, which gives a quite lenthy alternative to a "repair" install using the Recovery Console, but I am saving that for last, as it's very involved.  

As for doing a "Repair Install", that may or may not do the trick. But if it does, I'll never know what the problem was, so I can report to the computers owner whether her kids downloaded a virus or installed a rogue program or something along those lines.
