Question

Free space

Asked by: BMMB

I have a ~40 GB harddrive with two partitions (C: 17.7 GB and D: 19.5 GB)... The problem is with the local disk C:... It used to show that i have 3-4 GB left of free space... but now it shows that i have only 956 MB... im surprised to see that because i didnt download or install any programs... However, when i select all the folders on C: drive and click properties, it shows that i have 13.4 GB occupied... that should leave me with at least 4 GB  of free space... I've checked "Recycler" and "System Volume Information" folders and couldn't find anything there...

Does anyone know what the problem is? Thank you.

You may have hidden files on ur C dive which is reporting incorrect space on this partition. What about other partition (D).

Goto Start > Settings > Control Panel > Folder Options > View Tab > Click on "Show hidden files and folders", "Hide Protected Operating System Files (Recommended)" < uncheck both the options and now try to see the space on C drive.

double click on "my computer", then click once on the "c:drive" folder. look at the bottom left in the details area, this is the amount of disk you have used. clicking on all the folders in the c:drive including the hidden ones, doesn't really tell you how much space you have on your disk.

Some computers store all your restore settings on a partition which is used when you put the restore disk in Time for example use this and so you seem to have less than you should have.

Just have to ask, so we know. Are you using Mozaila ?
Have you tried to emty the trashcan on each disk? Also Mozilla problably like other browsers saves local cache files. This might explain the increase of usage i C:

Thankx

System restore by default is switched on and can take upto 10% HDD space, you can of course change this or indeed disable it. check your settings: start/right click my comp/properties/system restore.
Right clicking on your c: drive and then clicking properties and disk cleanup can free more space also.

......Also If you have virtual memory configured this can use HDD space as RAM.
