The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Why when I install Service Pack 1 or 2, do I lose all my USB 2.0 ports.

Hey...

I have an up market AMD PC and are having issues with Service Packs from Microsoft with my USB 2.0 ports. I am using XP Pro.

My PC works fine and all USB ports work. However when either Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 is installed, I lose my USB ports. I did have my mouse and webcam hooked up to USB, before discovering my SP1 and SP2 problems. I have changed the mouse over to PS/2 and been trying to fix my USB problem.

Prior to reformating and reinstalling XP Pro, everything worked fine.

USB is enabled in BIOS. I have unchecked turn off power to all USB devices, in device manager. I have removed all USB ports, reboot and Windows recognises new hardware, installs drivers and all is good. But USB ports still aren't working when devices are plugged in (Webcam, mouse, flash drive)

During startup of windows, the webcam LED light goes on,off,on,off and remains off. Similar story with my USB mouse, it's optical mouse and the red light is on, reaches windows xp load page (blue thingie left to right) loads and webcam flickers, and mouse loses power and webcam. When i plug in my USB flash drive, Orange LEDs come on for a second, then go off.

There's enough evidence to say that it's something to do with supplying power/enabling power, allowing power to be continuosly used by USB ports. Dont be narrow minded with your answers/solutions though, these are just my thoughts.

It's got nothing to do with my PSU, because there is no issue when Service Pack's aren't installed.

Hope someone can help =)
