Question

No Sound XP Upgrade

Asked by: billfox3

Hi, I just uograded a freinds computer from a 20 gig HD to a 40 gig HD. At the same time we upgraded to XP Pro. When it booted up there was no sound. Device Manager says that the Creative soundcard is functioning normally. We intalled sp2 - no change. Went to windows update- found an updated driver for the souncard - still no sound. This is a Gateway computer (circa 2000 or 2001) 500mhz PIII, 320MB ram, Creative soundcard. Swapped in and booted from old Win98 hard drive - sound works perfectly - change back to XP drive - no sound. Any ideas?
Thanks, Bill

It sounds as though the sound card is fine, so it much be some sort of configuration setting. Are you just not hearing the sound when booting? What happens if you try to play a CD, or a sound file on the computer? Do you have the little speaker icon in the system tray area?

This page on my website is predominantly aimed at Win9x/ME, but it has some advice that is pertinent to XP also:

I have no windows sounds, no cd audio, no WMP sounds, nothing at all. The little speaker is there and is not muted. I saw another post that said to check the BIOS to make sure that PNP o/s says no, I checked that and it was correct.
Lee - The last comment in your website about booting into safemode to see duplicates - does that work in Xp as well? I haven't tried that yet, next time I go there I will try it.
Any other ideas?

Do you have headphones that you can test instead of the speakers?

by: billfox3Posted on 2005-01-30 at 17:36:44ID: 13179255

Yes I do, but the speakers are fine. The computer will boot and play sounds with the old hard drive with Win98.

There is no need to boot into Safe mode to see hidden devices in XP.  This is what you do instead:  Create an environment variable:  "devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" and set it to 1; (Right-click my computer and select properties, click the Performance and Maintenance tab, and then click System.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click Environment Variables.
The Environment Variables dialog box contains two sections, User variables and System variables. The changes made by adding a variable in the User variables section apply only to a specific user. If another user logs on to this computer, this variable will not be set for them. If you want this variable to apply to all users that log on to this computer, add it to System variables instead.

In the User variables or System variables dialog box, click New.
In the New User Variable or New System Variable dialog box, in Variable Name, type the following (including the underscores):
DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES
In Variable Value, enter 1.
Click OK, and then in the Environment Variables dialog box, click OK to apply this change.)

Once you have done that, open up  a new instance of device manager (Right-Click "My computer" | Manage | Device Manager) and from the device manager select View | Show hidden devices.  Anything that is greyed out
can PROBABLY be uninstalled (notable aceptions:  Fs_Rec under devices, RAS Async Adapter under Network Adapters, and the Microsoft Kernel/Streaming stuff under your Sound Drivers) This may kill off your imaginary devices.

You have to install the mother board drivers. XP installs every thing except the PCI Audio drivers. It realy works!!!
