The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Need help plz!  VX2 spyware, can't remove; MS IE dead, Windows Explorer dead, situation critical DEFCON 5

Asked by IT-Mom in Windows XP Operating System

Tags: remove, vx2

Hi y'all - I'm still having issues with the machine from my 1st post but have made some headway.  I believe the primary problem is a particularly nasty piece of spyware called VX2.  At this point it has shut down IE and Windows Explorer and Norton AV 2005 is erroring left & right.  I have spent lots of time surfing the web & have found LOTS of comments from other users about the nastiness of this stuff and various fixes.  Unfortunately none of them have helped.  This includes AdAware, PC Bug Doctor, and various others.  They appear to the remove it but then it reappears on reboot because it's polymorphic and changes the files every time it loads on startup.  Cannot do system restore to previous restore points, fails in normal and safe mode.  Recovery console does not seem to be helping either.  Loaded it and tried to boot into default windows installation but still can't get to files.  I'm running out of ideas here and my brain is tired :-)

I have found three instances of it through AdAware, using their special Add-On tool for VX2; unfortunately it's still not completely removing the bug.  The files it has infected are located in C:\System Volume Information\_restore\{CF4208B6-7C54-40F3-9488-9CB87E27D57C}\RP612\A0064436.exe, ditto on path to file A0064435.dll and A0064434.exe.  I can't see the files even as Administrator, get an "access denied".  I have tried to attrib -h -r -s on them and can't change attributes, assuming that is the reason I get the "access denied" error.

My client is obviously not interested in nuking the machine since it's the server at their business (and they surf the web on it - OMG!!!), so they would prefer I continue to try to clean it up first.  Reformat & reinstall is last option.  Anyone who can help me will receive many blessings from Texas!

Thanks so much,
IT-Mom
