Question

Massive Booting up Problems - Urgent Help! Will give Extra Points!

Asked by: SaLz

hi, all of a sudden my computer is having a hard time booting into windows. its feels like a banged up car, where u got 2 give it a allot goes 2 get it working, starting and nothing happening, u turn it off, try again, still nothing, just a BEEP,BEEP,BEEP,BEEP, just like a car with out it starting, and when it does start it loads up and when it loads sometimes the WindowsXP logo, all of a sudden turns into a Fuzzy right mess, like pixel fuzz, distorted mess, and it just hangs, sometimes when its getting into windows it will see the login windows screen with my mouse icon and when, it will all of a sudden restart its self and then my monitor wont turn on, just a flashing light on the front as tho my PC isn't switched up.

it took me like 20mins to get into windows this time, I was praying to this computer, please start please, let me back up, like getting on my hands and knees and begging it 2 start, like ya do lol, so I'm like on my knees begging this computer 2 start, praying for it 2 start, and I don't normally pray, but this time I was praying and saying I'll back up if u start, honest I will. please just start so I can back up.

so am backing up right now, but I don't know how long it will hold out, need some quick advice.

when this happened was, when I was messing at the back, I installed this Mic/Stero transferer, u just flick a switch and u can have your head phones, switch it the other way, u have sound coming from your speakers.

but the other day I pressed the switch 2 go into head phone sound and the hole PC restarted its self, sometimes the PC restarts it self wile am in the shower or just afk, I come back and the pc is bumped, black screen, flashing light on monitor as tho the pc is switched off, but not.

also, priar to it all I was defragging.. maybe that might be also, I don't know, but I left my pc on for like a day defraggin, with Diskeeper Pro 9, my friends HD packed out because he defragged with that, he lost everything.

so now am no bothing with organizing I've just taken shit out of folders files reg, emails everything that I need and dumped it into a folder and them slippting them into DVD sive and just backing them all up, I'll do the organizing later, just need that data backing.

am on Windows XP home, 120gb hard drive, amd 2400xp, 128mb g-force 4 ti.

I don't know what else 2 say, the pc is like 2-3yrs old and I aint formatted in like 2yrs, this computer has been the best PC ever, no hassle or anything, a perfect computer, never have to format always working and all of a sudden its acting up, like an old car that just wont start up.

if there is anything else u want to place, just ask.

I'll keep my eye out for posts wile am backin up.

100gb 2 back up on 8x DVD, gonna take a wile.

I can only give 500points in this question, but I'll make a new question to give them points to the people that have helped the most.

First thing is.....

Calm down.

I reckon (and this is just my opinion) the power supply has shot it.  If this is the case, your hard drive is safe, and all the data on it.

Open the case and disconnect any power leads you don't need, for instance, if you have one or more case fans, disconnect them, if you have a second CD ROM, take that out the mix too, floppy drive aint needed at the moment.  Just anything you don't need to do your backups.  Obviously, leave your hard drive connected, your CD writer and your processor fan (Very important).

If you happen to have another power supply you could try, go ahead, but don't go and buy one just on my say so, let's see what other "experts" think first.  But that's the first thing I would try though.

If computer just beeps, but doesn't start to load, it mean BIOS cannot pass memory test. So the answer would be simple - faulty RAM, RAM slot in mainboard, or maybe it is inserted not properly. Try inserting RAM into a different RAM slot, if it doesn't help - try to change the RAM, if it doesn't help either - return Mainboard to the place you bought it - it is bad. If computer boot's up SOMETIMES, it just don't mean anything - check the same problems, cause even it booted a couple of times, it doesn't say that RAM to be good.

The Beeps are the POST error beeps indicating a hardware problem with your
PC.  From what you described it sounds like your video card is going out.
If you can and are confident with switching out your hardware swap the video
  card and install the driver.

  Good Luck.

Not sure what type of PC Brand you have or the BIOS type which should flash on the screen
momentarily on boot up if you can post them back to here.

These are some of the POST error code sites that refer to the beep you are hearing.

ye I think the beeps went, 1 long beep an 2-3 short ones. am on a AMD 2400 xp

in that beep code it says, Display adapter problem (MDA, CGA), Enhanced  Graphics Adapter (EGA) or a Conventional/Extended memory failure

think the Award is my bio, I see this logo when booting up, award, powersaver or something,

1long and 2 short, Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information, is this why am getting a black screen when I try and bootup, and my monitor is like flashing tho the computer is turned off.

even on the gateway bios link, says 1long 2 short is video.

if it is my video card, the 128mb g-force 4 ti, its like 3yrs old now, been working like a treat, the hole system is old, got it at the high specs at its time and not onces has it failed, been a perfect computer, some of my friends format each month, they probly had like 2-3 pc's in the past 3yrs.

so it could be my graphics card and bios not being able to display the info onto the screen, is there anything I should do, is this the only problem, would ram or psu be a problem or would it just be the graphics card?

The best thing to do is to see if one of your friends who you mentioned
buy or upgrade their computer alot has a video card you can swap for yours
to test to see if yours is bad.

The symptoms point to a video card it could be memory or something else but
we need to see if it's video related before swapping out or going through a
number of other things it could be.

when I rebooted, just hr ago, it booted up normal, went into windows normal, but then about 20minutes later when I tryed opening a Video, the PC just restarted it self, and then the screen went messed up, fuzzy, boxs of color, total razzled screen.

I tryed booting up, it beeped only once, like normal but the screen was wacked, messed up, blocks of color nothing else.

so I switched off, had a look behind 2 see if I might have pulled the screen socket out of the card, pulled it out, had a blow, then I though ok, I might as well take out the graphics card and have a look, and long and behold, guess what I saw..

the damn graphics card had melted :-O for real, there was burn marks and the plastic had warped into a funnel, insteal of being like flat it was cone shaped, and smelt bad.

I've got 5 fans on it, and still it warped.. lol

so after all the narrowing down on what might be the problem, it turned out my graphics card had warped though excessive heat which is a bad sign.

guess I'll have 2 buy a new graphics card :-S I might as well upgrade my PC wile am at it, this was a wake up call, I'm still backing up and am going 2 backup everything important, cos if this data was to be lost, it would be..

thanks for your all your help, we always take things for granted untill its almost gone, this was a wake up call for me, be prepared for the unexpected!

thanks for your help guys.
Sal.

here are some SS of the damaged graphics card, I'm amazied ut not, cos for the past week its been very hot in this room.

Yeah, that certainly got a little on the warm side didn't it?

You are lucky it's a fault you can see (and smell).  It made it a little easier to diagnose.  Glad you are on the road to recovery!

and thanks, even though I was wrong :O

you wasn't wrong NoirLuna, like the saying goes, "we are always wrong, thats how we lead to being right" the problem was many, could have been anything that was wrong, but we narrowed each one and cut off the ones that didn't fit and kept on narrowing the issue untill we had the right answer :)

it turned out that my graphics card fried leading to the unbalanced information to my monitor and the errors which leads my pc to crash when opening a video or when the screensaver kicks in when I was afk.

it all boiled down to that graphics card, and when I pulled it out, I was stunned how warped it was, I had 5 fans, and still it overheated and melted the plastic, it must have been very hot in that case or the amount of dust that was found when I opened it, which would have resulted in the loss of fan motion which would have cooled the graphics card and stopped it from melting.

we learn from our mistakes, if we don't we will make the same mistake again.

I know I'll keep my casing dust free, and kept clean, I'll check more often that everything is running smooth, hard drive is fine and all that and just keep an eye on things more, we sometimes forget to do these things and take them for granted untill your faced with losing what you have.

and today it was a close one, my graphics card maybe fried, but its replaceable, most data on our hard drives are not, I'm just glad it had given me the time to backup.

I guess we all get on our hands and knees and pray when we are confronted with losing something which is dear to us.

thankyou for your help today, it was much appreciated.
Sal.

Dust in computers has caused many a system failure.  Whenever I do a "PC service" for someone, all the fans are cleaned and oiled and the vacuum cleaner pipes get shoved into every nook and cranny.  You can't go over the top with that.

If you have onboard graphics, at least you can use that for the time being.

Thanks again.
