Yeah, you should definitely install SP2. You might do well to ask your admin or some other friends for a copy of it on CD. At 266 MB, it might be quite a download. Depending on your bandwith, of course.
Also, make 100% sure that the machine is clean of virii and malware. Using adaware alone might not be sufficient. See

Run Windows Update

Open internet Explorer- tools Windows update
Install the windows XP sP2 Update plus all subsequent updates including the VPN fix.
It is highly advisable that you backup your data and check for virus using your virus scanner and adware (using adaware from www.lavasoft.com) before you install SP2.
