Browse All TopicsHi,
Now call me stupid or laugh but I do like to do some ( probably illegal ) downloading of some files and music and use both morpheus and also Limewire pro. Last night I left it downloading a small clip and awoke this morning to hopefully find it downloaded but I got a message saying that I was no longer connected to the internet and the download had stopped. I found this strange as I am on DSL Cable ! anyway I tried Morpheus and it too would not connect. So I paused both my Mcaffee and also windows XP firewalls and still no good. So I ran my Adaware spyware programe thinking it may be that, still no good, then ran my Macaffee anti-virus thinking it maybe a virus although I am very careful with both what I download and what I allow on my system. That yielded no results, so deleted both programes and tried again and still no connection detected. Now I know there is an internet conection as I would not be here now ! I have looked at the LAN Connection and am connected at 100 Mbps. So can anyone tell me how in under 24 hours I am getting this very confusing picture, could it be the software or the LAN connection ?
Kind Regards Dave

Do what Rindi suggested:
open a command prompt
then write ipconfig /all
post what you can read
Then I suggest you to download and run Hijackthis 1.99.1
After that post the result of the scan on this site: www.hijackthis.de (and maybe also here)
Hope it helps, elbereth
Start, Run, and you'll get a window where you can enter
cmd
Click on OK, and you get a command prompt window.
In here you can now enter
ipconfig /all
and after that, when you have given us those results,
ping 216.239.57.99
and also show us that output.
How do you connect to your DSL cable? Can you tell us what hardware you have?
thanx.
Hi all .
This is what is written in the command prompt window, I have no hardware as such as its a laptop but I do have a external modem. I use a usb port to connect to the modem.

Is there anything else needeed ?
Have you tried using HijackThis?
You can download it here: http://www.merijn.org/down
This will tell you if you have spyware.
Ok. The results of those ping tests indicate that you are still online; connected to both the internet and LAN. Try opening up Internet Explorer (Start -> All Programs -> Internet Explorer) and try going to www.google.com. If it loads up make sure you hit the refresh button and it still loads after you have pressed it. If you still can not access the internet through internet explorer have you tried restarting the computer? And yeah if it still doesnt work youll need to download HiJackThis and post your logfile here. It's most likely you have some adware or virus thats blocking your connection.
Hi,
I got online no probs and downloaded Google as fast as it normally does, I do have Adaware SE Proffessional installed on my PC. I have used this for ages and have never had a problem I have also done a virus check and it found nothing on my system.
I would be grateful for any more help as to why this has just started, and more importantly how to cre it and stop it from happening again
Regards Dave
I know this isn't a real solid answer but it happens to me all the time on Cable. You could have had a service outage last night. If you are connected through a router sometimes the router kind of "messes up" and you get similar results as you have described them. If you get the problem again the first thing to do is to restart the computer. If that doesn't fix it then restart your router and/or modem by unplugging its power cord and plugging it back it. Those two steps clear up 99% of the problems out there with this sort of thing.
Your connection to the internet in fact works, so now it is time to find out why you can't do any browsing. Can you show us your settings in "Control Panel", (set your control panel to classical view) "Internet Options", and now select the "Connections" Tab. Now tell us what you have in your "settings". Do you have a proxy server Set? If you do, remove any proxy servers.
If you can't download hijackThis, do the following:
Right-Click "My Computer", select "Properties" and click on the "System Restore" Tab. Turn system restore off. You should also do that before running hijackThis, by the way.
Now click on Start, Run and type in msconfig.
Click on "Startup" and tell us what programs are being started. Also have a look at "services", turn on the check box "hide all microsoft services" and also tell us which are selected and which aren't.
Thanx once more...

The fact you know and use Adaware is not a real assurance, since generally a single Anti-spyware is not enough: at least two different products are normally required, to have a substantially acceptable protection.
Have a run of HijackThis, which is really different from AdAware in what it does and how.
I can't see anything in your log file which rings too many bells, well, I wouldn't run all those messangers etc, but that is personal (although messengers can be a security risk).
You can paste the log to the following site:
http://www.hijackthis.de/e
your log will then be analized automatically and you will see an dangerous settings. You can then use a button with which to clean your system of those.
Well, if I understood corectly, I know this problem very well. Some kind of virus (its brand new one) damaged your winsock. If you have XP SP2, try go to Start->Run and type netsh winsock reset catalog.
If you have SP1, or don't have SP at all, you will have to download winsock repair tool from net.
Read there for more:
http://www.cit.cornell.edu
BTW, of course, you must get rid of any spyware/malware/viruses ASAP, or it will repeat. BTW, in a place I work had a lot computers with the same problem in a couple of weeks, at least you can do system repair - it would help too. The main thing to identify it if pings goes smooth, but you cannot do anything with your internet.
Hi,
I wish I could give you all the same but after I did what VTomukas said I seem to have fixed the problem....no wether it was what he said or not i don't know so I felt it fair not to give points to all of you who gave some time and made a big contribution so thanks to one and all.
Kind Regards Dave

Do a ipconfig /all from a command prompt and post the results here. Also run ping 216.239.57.99 and post those results here.
