Hi craziest,
I would try the obvious first. AntiVirus scan, spyware, disk check.

Cheers!

It seems like you explorer is corrupt. I suggest you run sfc /scannow through the command line.

Start->run->cmd
then type sfc /scannow , make sure ur windows xp cd is inserted. does it fix it?

Is it when you doubleclick or just singleclick? When you single click you normally get a little preview in the bottom left hand folder. If it's a single click I guess there is a problem with however that is done, but I'm afraid I don't know how. Hopefully someone here does.
If it's doubleclick then we need to look at what program is trying to open the file.

caltor,
      it doesnt have to be double or single click,i mean whenever i access a folder the explorer.exe error occurs.
sometimes i get a chance to click on the multimedia file and open it but seconds later the explorer restarts.
This usually is  the solution to such a problem but it never worked for me
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\System FileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler
and delete whats on default.
