I tried sfc /scannow, inserted the XP disc when asked for it. I had to click "Try Again" and "Cancel" so many times during the check that it was impossible to run it. It is an original XP disc so there shouldn't be any problem, the disc is not very much scrathed either. Perhaps this has something to do with SP-2?
I haven't dared running a repair. Is it really safe? I mean I know I did the similar thing with Win98, 98SE and ME and it resulted in even worse Windows-condition.
Hi Ruddi,
Two things, firstly when you run sfc you only need to replace the files it flags as corrupt, you don't have to worry about the ones that are marked as changed. Most will have since installing SP2! Secondly, running repair is perfectly safe, I do it 4/5 times a week on machines that come through the support section here (never underestimate a users ability to screw a machine!).
Barry
It is perfectly fine provided you follow those instructions I gave you with regards to the website above !!
If that does not work or help you at all you can back up your data and do a clean install ie format it and re install xp, I would personally stick with windows xp pro SP 1 with only critical updates NOT SP 2 !
Let me know how it goes with regards to the repair install though !

This could be either faulty hardware (most likely memory if it is the rundll32.exe file that is causing errors) or it could just be that your system files are a little bit corrupt. The first thing to do would be to open the run dialogue from the start menu and type sfc /scannow. This will check the status of your system files to tell you if any of them are corrupt. If it does not show any as being corrupt then you would want to run a repair installation on your machine. To do this you would put in the Windows XP disk and follow the installation through till it asked what partition you would like to use. Select the partition with windows currently on it and press enter. It will then warn that it already contains windows, at which point press R to repair. This will not wipe windows, simply install all the system file components over the top of themselves. (You should reinstall SP2 after this!).
If that still does not work try replacing the memory.
Hope that helps,
Barry
