Question

Software needed to automate an existing Windows application as if a person were running the program, pressing keys, and mouse clicks.

Asked by: thhjr

A customer has a windows application that controls a piece of hardware for testing electronics modules.  The windows application configures the test based upon user input and performs the test.  The customer wants to have me configure a bar code reader to scan the model number of the UUT and then automatically configure the existing Windows application and have it perform the test.

The problem is that the developer of the Windows Application is unwilling to modify the application or provide source code.  I need a product that will allow me to load an existing Windows application and then simulate keystrokes, menu selections, mouse movement, and mouse clicks to control the app.  I've seen these years ago, but I am trying to find what is available out there now.  I found one package that looks like it will do what I need, but it runs $800.  Anything out there better/cheaper and does anybody have any experience in using these application.

To bad the application isn't OLE compliant.

If it is not OLE compliant then you must programme everything.Find a cost acceptable programmer to do that for you.
You can even rent them online :-)

I've been programming for 35 years.  The problem is that the control application in Windows contains proprietary info and control algorithyms that control a proprietary piece of hardware.  The hardware and software function together to accomplish the tesing task.
Writing the application from scratch is not an option.  I need to control their windows app as if I were there sitting in front of it.  There are packages out there that can do this.  I found one, there must be others.

The best program for this is called Auto It 3. By writing simple scripts you can activate, close, minimise and maximized windows. You can also send keys, mouse clicks and more. The language is pretty strait forward and the program give lots of examples to help you.

Senad, no matter what progam you go with, I would reccomend that you use key strokes to automate your process instead of mouse clicks. The reason for this is that most programs capture where you clicked last. (for instance at pixel 100 x 250) The problem with this is that if you program happens to open up in a different place (maybe a little lower or higher than last time) or if another window is ontop of it you click will not go through correctly. Try to use keys like tab, alt and enter instead.

Autoit also has a recorder, so you can record your actions and replay them later. At least version2 had this. I'm not sure about version 2. I mainly use autoit to automatically setup user programs which can't be installed automatically using other methods when I deploy new PCs.
