Question

Computer Browser Service crashes

Asked by: joe-quick

I keep getting this error message in my event log:
Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      Service Control Manager
Event Category:      None
Event ID:      7023
Date:            4/14/2005
Time:            11:43:43 PM
User:            N/A
Computer:      QCSPC20
Description:
The Computer Browser service terminated with the following error:
This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

My computer seems to be working fine though. I just hate error messages in my even log.
I do have a problem with a program that broadcasts messages on the network not working and thought this might be the cause. So before I reinstall that app Id see if any one had any suggestions.

The Computer Browser service lets you track servers that are active on the network with a minimum of network overhead.
If you are not on a network then I suggest you disable Computer browser service.

A very nice suggestion from maxmiller;

If you want to use it as it is, just Copy between the lines and Paste into Notepad and save it as Services.reg
Save it onto the Desktop, then just double-click it.

(Note) The lines that begin with a semi-colon ( ; ) do not need to be removed.
They are comment lines and will be totally ignored by the registry editor.
If you would prefer some Services to remain the XP Default or different than noted, just change the end number of the particular Service to suit.

---------------Begin Copy and Paste------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; The number 00000002 means  the Service will be "Automatic"
; The number-------------3 means----------------------------"Manual"
; The number-------------4 means----------------------------"Disabled"
; Right after the semi-colon is the action this tweak will perform
; this is then followed by XP's default setting in brackets.

Thanks senad,
Im sorry I should have stated that I was on a network, Doman to be exact. 1 PDC and 1 BDC. I log onto the pc not the domain, and I have no problem contacting those servers.

Maybe I will try logging onto the domain and see if i still get the error.

I checked out the link you gave, there is some great stuff there! Gonna have to give you points just for that. ;)
