Stop Error - IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - Windows XP Won't Boot Help

Hey there,

I'm the "goto" guy for friends and family members when they have a problem.  Today, I've been given a computer (built machine, WindowsXP Pro) that has the following "stop" error.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0x0000014C, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x804F22EA)

The user says they have not made any hardware or software changes in recent weeks, the problem just started.  I can't boot to Windows in any form or fashion, safe mode(s), "last known good config", or normall, because this error comes up.  (Booting into any of the safe modes doesn't work because the computer just locks up as it showing you the list of files it's processing.  All of the other boot modes boots me to the STOP error.)

The user says there is no info on the PC that can't be replaced, so if a simple reinstall of XP Pro will suffice, I have no problem doing that.  I'm just wondering if there is something else involved here, and if redoing the WindowsXP installation will only waste my time.

The one thing I did notice when I got the PC home, was that it appears the user literally ripped the cat5 cable out of the NIC PCI hard, and broke the clip on the jack of the PCI card itself, and bent the aluminum molding on the outside of the case just a little.  A new PCI NIC card is not 100% necessary for functionality, but for practicallity, it appears that a new one should be purchased.

Any ideas on where I can get started with this machine?

Thanks
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

First off, does it boot without the NIC?

Check out this PAQ. It includes a link that should solve your problem.

Good luck!
