Question

windows starts to load and then reboots

Asked by: fayb

When I turn on my computer, the windows xp logo shows normally, lbut during the boot process, the computer shuts down and then restarts and displays the selection screen for normal or safe mode.  I press enter and it starts to load and then reboots again.  Sometimes it fully boots and the computer functions normally.  Could this be some virus and if so what can be done about it?

The first I would try is to disable all unneeded startup items:
run 'msconfig' from Start menu/Run...
Check if there are some non-microsoft services on the second-last tab and disable them for troubleshooting. check also the last tab and disable all of them.

If the problem is gone after that, check for Spyware first with Spybot or Ad-Aware

Run in safe mode to see if it still reboots.  You may be infected with a virus that has access to the reboot function.  To turn off rebooting just go to Start --> Control Panel --> System --> Advanced --> Startup and Recovery Settings --> uncheck automatically restart.  This will disable automatic restarts.  Run a spyware check and virus check to make sure you are not infected.

All I did was to remove a partly working cd drive and replace it with a sony dvd recorder.  The jumper was set correctly.  I made sure all of the cables were securely connected.

It is interesting that when I start the computer, it goes to the screen where one selects whether to start normally or go to safe mode.  It then counts down and starts to load windows.  Partly through starting windows, it  reboots and this time the windows desktop comes up as it should and everything works fine.  This is very consistent - it happens thiis way every time I tried.

Whenever I've seen anything like this, its been because of a hardware issue.

I'd look at what hardware you have recently changed, and revert back.

It might be an overheating issue or a memory failure.

Does it reboot when it hits windows (when the background loads), or sometimes before?

HM2K
The first thing I get is the screen that occurs when it has been shut down incorrectly (even though it was shut down correctly from start and shutdown previously).  After the countdown I get the windows logo screen and then it reboots.  This time is boots normally and xp loads correctly and the computer works normally.

Actually what I do now is just push the start button on the computer, ignore the screens, and I am in business.
