The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Windows Explorer error won't let me use IE and Explorer

Asked by jericotolentino in Windows XP Operating System

Tags: explorer, encountered

Dear experts,

I have a Windows XP Pro System (no service packs installed). Everything was working fine until about lunchtime today. I was surfing the internet and a popup window came up. Like I usually do with them, I closed it. A few moments later, McAfee VirusScan told me it found some trojan (I don't recall the name) and asked me what I wanted to do. I quarantined it. At the same time, my desktop background changed to the blue screen of death with some error written on it. Irritated with this development, I right-clicked on the desktop to restore it to the original wallpaper. The only tabs I got was the Themes and the Settings. I didn't understand what was happening since I was logged on as an administrator. All tabs should've been present.

Then my system just restarted. Too puzzled to be more annoyed, I just let the system boot. After I logged in, a dialog box saying Windows Explorer encounted an error came up and asked me if I wanted to report it. Since I wasn't connected to the Internet, I clicked on "Don't send."

So the start menu and desktop icons disappeared temporarily and to my surprise the "Windows Explorer encountered an error..." dialog box was still there. I clicked on "Don't send" again and still the start button and icons disappear and return with the error dialog box. So I just turned off the system.

I don't know what to do now so I was hoping for some of your insights on this problem. BTW, I can use Ctrl+Alt+Del to run some programs, but not IE, Windows Explorer, My Computer, and My Documents.

Thanks in advance!
