Question

Using Remote Assistance in Windows XP

Asked by: jrt01uk

Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend over long-distance using the Remote Assistance feature in Windows XP. We both have Windows XP Home Edition. The problem is that my friend is currently learning how to use PCs, and has run into a bit of a problem which he needs my help with, but he's having difficulty with creating a remote assistance request to send to me.

I was hoping that someone knew of a foolproof method in which I could tell him to do this - as little intervention as possible on his part would be much appreciated by me....it appears that he's having difficulty even in emailing me a request. It doesn't sound like there's any problems with his setup because I've done this in the past.

He has dial-up connection, so I can't talk him through the process over the telephone because he needs to be on the internet before Windows will allow him to access the screens. Is there some shortcut I could use to make this whole process simpler?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
Regards,
Jason

Have him dl and install Windows messenger - there is a button option on the messenger control panel to ask for remote assistance - plus, you'll have the advantage of being able to chat with him while he's connected.

There's essentially three methods for sending an invitation.
Have him print out these pages - includes sub pages of all three methods:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/remoteassist/intro.mspx

Also - make sure there is no firewall installed on his system - if so, temporarily disable it, because that will sometimes block RA requests.

The 'easiest' method should be using Messenger, but you both have to have the same version for it to work seamlessly...

What error(s) or problems are you seeing?

Have you tried using the remote assistance tool in msn messenger? You just both need to be running the same version. How are you communicating with hime right now?

Thanks for this :)

There are no errors or problems as such, I just wondered if there was a simpler way that even one of these three, where perhaps I send a support offer, and he simply accepts it... I notice this is possible using XP Pro, but I can't find any similar methods otherwise... ???
