The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Internet Explorer and MSN Crashing, consistently

I do not know what is causing this, nothing major has changed on my configuration to spark it, but now whenever I open a webpage, click a hyperlink in a program or launch IE manually it crashes as soon as the page loads. A few days ago this was only for certain websites but now everything appears to cause the app. to terminate. Each time I am presented with the "Application needs to close" dialog.

Each time the error signature is similar to this:
AppName: iexplore.exe       AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180       ModName: wininet.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2668       Offset: 0001b820

I have run the system file checker and tried repairing IE to no avail.

This morning MSN Messenger has also started to crash everytime it signs in. What's going on? Is my hard drive about to fail?

The only alteration I have made to my setup was to update Java from the Sun website last week. I have since rolledback to a previous version - which I had installed for many months prior to this problem emerging - but to no avail: both applications keep crashing.

I can't find anything on the MS KB about this. "IE keeps crashing" is apparantly not specific enough, but I can't work out what's causing it.
