i think that you're right it may be the memory, but the problem with runing the test is that the laptop in question , does not have a flopy drive , i by the way can connect to the net using the laptop in question , is there any way i can download a program to the laptop and run it to see if the problem is in fact the memory , thanks
do you have a usb drive. You could download memtest on another machine, copy it to the usb drive and then transfer it to the offending laptop.
Or can you network the machine and transfer it directly from another machine.
or burn memtest onto a cd.
I would use memtest, there is nothing in standard windows that can do a thorough memory test.
sorry, I misread your post, thought you said you could not connect to the internet from the laptop
You can download memtest from
http://www.memtest86.com/
i can download , the file ,but once i have in my hard drive , how do i test the memory , cause when i dolbe click on the dos file from memtest , it promps me for the target drive , but my offended laptop does not have a floppy drive , there for i can not boot up from a floppy drive in order to test the drive , thanks
This memtest runs in windows:
http://hcidesign.com/memte
Or you can get Memtest86 3.2 ISO and burn a bootable CD:
http://www.memtest86.com/#
or use ubcd, it contains memtest86+ and many other tools, and boots from cd :

might be worth running check disk
from the dos prompt type "chkdsk /F" (without the quotes)
run memtest to check the memory is not bad
