Question

Is ASR intended to replace a corrupt / infected OS without having to reinstall all the programs??

Asked by: hardstarburst

My machine is sending spam. I know this because I keep getting email returned to me that I didn't send. For now, I just unplug from the net, but now we're starting to go real S  L  O  W...

Is ASR intended for the purpose of "unregistering" all the programs, then rewrite the OS, and then re-register them??

OR is ASR sort of like a  factory image where it takes a snapshot of the system state (viruses and all) and restores back to that state??

I know, I know-  don't tell me to format and reload everything.  I want to know if this is one of the intended uses of ASR.

OR is ASR intended as a recovery from a hdd failure??

what do you mean with ASR?
Since your system is infected, i would disinfect it first :
Boot into safe mode, and run ALL these , preferably with system restore off :

I presume by ASR you mean Automated System Recovery.  Here is a pretty good article on that:

http://www.quepublishing.com/articles/article.asp?p=102260&seqNum=7&rl=1

A quotation from the article:

The files that are backed up include the system state data and all files stored on the system volume. System state refers to all of the components that determine the current state of the operating system (hence the clever name) and includes such things as user accounts, hard drive configuration, network configuration, video settings, hardware configuration, software settings, and various other critical files that are required to run Windows XP Professional properly. Additionally, the system state includes files that are required to start the operating system properly, including those that are found in the %systemroot% directory and boot files such as ntldr and ntdetect.

Another good article on ASR:

http://www.netdesk.com/Resources/TheEngineRoom/AutoSysRecovery.htm

And one short quotation from it:

Please don't forget that the ASR process does not backup any user data. The ASR backup is only concerned with the files necessary to get the machine back on its feet. Even if the user data resides on the boot partition, it will not be backed up. You must have a separate, standard backup job for your user data.

From the above and other articles  I've seen on ASR, I believe it cannot act as a way to replace a corrupt or infected OS without reinstalling programs.  Infection by viruses, etc. is often present in folders that are considered "data"; in particular, for example, the Temporary Internet Files folder where pages from web browsing are cached, and these remain intact after ASR is done, so the infection won't be cleared out.

I didn't find any articles that implied that it had "the purpose of "unregistering" all the programs, then rewrite the OS, and then re-register them", as you put it. And, since the necessary files for loading the system are written to the backup file as is, it WOULD amount to "it takes a snapshot of the system state (viruses and all)".

>OR is ASR intended as a recovery from a hdd failure??

That is really its purpose, from all the articles I've read.
