When the ActiveX message shows, click that away and there'll be a new message at the top of Internet Explorer, saying that ActiveX Controls are blocking bla blabla, right click this message and then you can select "Install this Component" (or similar). After that your windowsupdate should move on normally.
Why buy? You can download AV programs for free as long as it is for personal use, and these are just as good or better than many packages you have to pay for and also pay for yearly subscriptions. One good such program is Avast!.

Get him to try clicking on that bar again (a normal click should do). He should then be asked if he want's this activeX component installed. Just say yes...
Try this:
Let's try registering Internet Explorer's DLL files. Go to Start->Run and copy and paste the following into the Run box and hit OK (go to Start->Run again for each one):
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
Restart and see if the problem with the ActiveX is still there.
The update from Microsoft is in the morning. I think just one patch this month.
This man's security Center is working just fine.
I have not registered Internet Explorer's DLL file, yet and may not greyknight17
I don't want to mess up his system. I am afraid to do this.
Problem still occurs, when click on microsoft updates,

If that doesn't help, does automatic updates work properly? See here:
