Automatic Update Settings are Greyed Out

Hello,
I have a laptop here that I just cleaned out many spyware infections.
They are all gone, but when I went to update windows I noticed something wrong.

I went to the Windows Update site, and it checked for the required updates and downloaded them, but the installations failed.

I checked to see if the BITS service was running as well as the Automatic Updates Service. Both are.

I then looked to see if Automatic Updates were enabled, and the whole tab for the settings was greyed out.

I've followed the steps layed out here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/aupolicy.htm but the problems remain.

I had also done a sfc /scannow after the spyware was completely removed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
