I have Win. XP Home Edition SP. 2 and wish to upgrade to Win. XP Pro...but the HP tech's have me all confused, what should I do?
**Transciprt from HP tech***
Thank you for writing back to us.
From the description, I see that you are getting "Setup cannot continue
because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the
version on the CD." error when trying to upgrade the operating system.
Let me assist you in this regard.
Weston, at this point, I would like to inform you that the probable
cause of the issue could be latest updates that you might have installed
through "Automatic Updates" feature of the Windows XP.
However, to upgrade the operating system, you need to have latest
"Windows XP with Service Pack 2" CD as this CD contains latest updates
included. Let me also inform you that when upgrading the operating
system, it is recommended to disconnect the notebook from internet
access.
The error suggested you to perform fresh installation instead of
upgrading. I would like to warn you that fresh installation of operating
system will remove all the data and the settings on the hard drive. As a
result, it is recommended to upgrade the operating system.
I suggest you to get latest "Windows XP with Service Pack 2" CD to
perform upgradation.

Dear Weston,
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
I would like to address the issues in order:
Issue #1:
I understand that you wish to install Windows XP Professional on your
Pavilion notebook. With reference to your inquiry, let me first inform
you that the Windows operating system included in the notebook is
enhanced by HP. The enhancements provide added functionality for power
management, security, and the use of drives and PC Cards. HP does not
recommend upgrading operating system as there is a possibility that
drivers for all the devices may not be available.
This does not mean that you cannot install other version of Windows,
however to install retail version Windows XP Professional with out
loosing device drivers and applications, it is advisable to upgrade
Windows XP Professional but not clean install (no format and
installing). For upgrading the Operating System, please visit the
following web site (Windows XP installation emulator) where the above
information is easier to read with graphics.
