Question

Windows update failure

Asked by: Chiarne

Hi,

After repairing a Windows XP Home pc the following error is displayed on the Windows Update site:

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.

I have encountered this error previously on another pc and reregistering the dll's fixed it.  Not this time.  I have tried reregistering the dll's twice,
and have reregistered all dll's starting with wu in the windows system32 folder.  The pc is set to display all system and hidden files.

All suggestions and help are greatly appreciated.

Regards

Chiarne

Chiarne,

See if this helps, an excerpt from MS KB:

Add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list in Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.
4. Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.
5. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the following addresses, clicking Add after you type each address:

http://update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx

6. Click OK two times.

Hi sramesh2k

No luck with either of your suggestions.  I have also tried reinstalling Windows Service Pack 2 and have checked the hosts file to make sure the update site isn't being blocked.

Chiarne,

If you're using a third-party firewall such as ZA / NIS etc, add Windows Update to the Trusted zone in the respective firewall application options.

Additional recommendations are listed in the following KB:

You receive Initialization error 0x80072F78 while the Windows Update Web site is loading:

Hi sramesh2k,

Windows firewall is running, Nortons Internet Security is off.

When accessing the windows site, no initialisation errors are displayed, the update page displays the custom and express option buttons, then clicking on either button results in the error "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view."

Chiarne,

Click Start, Run and type Services.msc
Make sure that these two services are running:

1. COM+ Event System (Set it to "Manual)
2. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (Automatic)

Additionally, if you're accessing the internet using a Proxy server, see the checklist here:

Hi sramesh2k,

COM+Event System was set to manual
Background Intelligent Transfer Service was stopped.  I have set it to Automatic as you suggested.

I've restarted the pc.  Windows update is still not working.

Hi,

I'm back with more info.  I've tried additional fixes to get Windows updates up and running...tried reinstalling windows updates, deleting everything in the Software distribution folder, running winsock fix, checking settings...

I then uninstalled Spybot S&D and updated to the latest version, 1.4.  When I click on the updates button..the following error displays:

Error retrieving update file
Socket Error #10061
Connection refused

Seems this is not just a problem with windows updates.  Norton's Internet Security is installed on this pc, but it is not running.  I have tried disabling the windows firewall, no success.

Ideas?

Regards

Chiarne

I have a friend who is having the same problem.
When we right click on the yellow active x bar below the address bar the active x does not load the nessary active x "fix"
You probably did this already, but follow these steps outlined at:

http://www.udel.edu/topics/windowsxp/XPupdate.html

If that doesn't help, does automatic updates work properly? See here:

Try this:

Let's try registering Internet Explorer's DLL files.  Go to Start->Run and copy and paste the following into the Run box and hit OK (go to Start->Run again for each one):

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Restart and see if the problem with the ActiveX is still there.

Hi d may,

I've tried registering IE's dll files.  No luck there.

When going to the Windows update site I can access the page with the two buttons - Express and Custom installation and when I click on either of these two buttons, the next page is the one with the error, (Error #0x80072EFD).  Apparently this error means the internet connection or proxy is configured incorrectly.

The pc is not configured to use a proxy.  I can access all other sites with no problem, except windows update and Spybot update.  Seems it's something to do with Socket Error #10061.

Hi,

Success, I've found the culprit.  Even though Norton Internet Security was not running it was the cause of all this.  I uninstalled NIS using the Rnis.exe tool.  After reinstalling NIS, windows update, Spybot and Adaware are all updating successfully.

I'll award the points to sramesh2k since he suggested the link to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836985.  There was a comment on this site suggesting the problem could be firewall related.

Thank you sramesh2k!

Regards

I'm glad that helped, Chiarne. I tried to post another link by there was an EE database error at that time. Here is the link, (see NIS part) : http://www.updatexp.com/0x80072efd.html
