Personally, I've been recommending McAfee for some time. HOWEVER, I'll admit, I usually use just the Antivirus Enterprise products. My problem with norton products in general are their tendency to conflict with other programs, especailly when updates come up, be it updates to Windows or other programs. McAfee doesn't seem to have NEARLY the problems Norton/Symantec problems do.
Have you checked MSCONFIG ? Start > Run > "MSCONFIG" then have a look under the start up list untick anything you are not sure of ... most new computers have a load of useless programs running on startup
other than that ... you may want to have a go at defraging your page file

You can also download the free www.winpatrol.com. It allows you to see in great detail the start up programs and gives you details what they are. It also allows you to susend their operation on the fly.

my system is still running slow, so im gona take my Symantec products off,as suggested by 'leew'! is there any free firewalls & antivirus software which is of a good standard or do the job until i find a suitable one to replace symantec?
Also would 'Antivirus Enterprise products' run ok on a laptop or they more suited to networks?
Enterprise products should run fine on a laptop.
AVG (free.grisoft.com) Antivirus is free for home use.
PC Magazine had a listing of various software that was "free" in a variety of categories.
Also, make sure you have enough RAM - XP - regardless of whatelse you might have - tends to need at least 512 MB to avoid feelings of slowness.

Get rid of Norton. The last version of Norton anything I found to NOT be a resource hog and slow down a system was back about 10 years ago for Windows 3.1. If you want, keep the antivirus and firewall, but most of the other things are probably just slowing you down.
