Im a complete novice when it comes to maintaining PCs so im hoping you can help.
I have 2 PCs (PC A and PC B)
Ive just aquired PC B and since it had a bigger hard drive than PC A i though i'd just swap em over...
On swapping the drives over both PCs failed to get past the splash screen and failed to boot up. So i just swapped the hard drives back over again.
Now when i use PC A i cant play and cds as i cant see the cd or dvd players from the windows explorer.
and
when i use PC B the keyboard doesnt respond. (the mouse is ok).
Since PC As keyboard is working i swapped the keyboards over and tested PC B's keyboard which works ok on PC A.
Thinking that the problem lay somewhere in the OS (possibly a missing or corrupted driver) i the proceeded to boot PC B from the CD and reformat the PC and reinstall Windows XP Pro.
No problems there...went though all the screens tabbing though fields, pressing return at the right parts to reformat the drive (so the keyboard seems ok here sinvce the return button is working...)
Then i get to the WINDOWS XP REGISTRATION page where i have to input the code key but the keyboard still aint working.
can anyone diagnose my problem besides my ineptitude and idiocy?
PS ive borrowed a usb keyboard to try and see if keyboard socket is damaged so i'll tst that tonight.
Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.

Still no joy,
keybd and mouse in correct sockets although i did borrow a usb keybaord which prduced a strange effect.
USB: when i plugged it in i couldnt use it on the dos OS select screen (he one where it counts down from 20 to select your operating sys, up and down arrows dit work and neither did the return key.
When you got into the OS itself and navigeted the desktop environ it was fine?
PS2: the oppsite was true, kybd worked on black OS screen but not in the desktop environ.
any ideas?
mm
Confusing..hea? simple things sometime....;
the mobo has to recognise the kbd. in its setup at boot.
If working, can test (press del to enter setup) tells you.
The USB kbd will not work with any OS without its drivers installed, as you discovered.
I found some m/b's with the kbd fuse blown (olders).
But i dont think you have that prob.
