Question

XP Pro - Logging in problems....

Asked by: jajjones

Hi !

I have just installed a new desktop at home running XP Home.  I set up the home network and added the workgroup MSHOME.  One of the maion reasons for this is that I wanted to use the printer etc from my laptop over the wireless network.  The laptop is running XP Professional.

the laptop is a member of another domain.  But I was logging in locally using my domain username and password (chose it from the drop-down in Options at login screen).  Anyway I went to System and changed the settings to join the MSHOME workgroup.  I got a nice welcome message (!) and was aksed to provide credentials for an user that could chane the settings for MSHOME (or something like that anyways !).  I entered a adm1n/adm1n combo and restarted when prompted.  Disaster !!!!!!!!!!  At the login screen I now do not get the option of choosing what I want to log in to.  And the username I entered (adm1n) does nto work.  Even my domain credentials can't get me in.  What is more, I do not know the admin account details, although my profile is a Admin profile............

Could someone help me out ?  Please ?!?!!!  Is there any way of getting in so that I can put everything back to the way it was ???

In anticipation.....

JAJ

jajjones,

In my limited opinion, I do not believe a printer can be used from a laptop the way you were attempting to do.  There are wireless printers, is that what you have?

Hi, when you leave a domain in windows XP, XP try to remove (destroy) the computer account in the domain. This is why you have a popup credentials. You need  account operator privileges on the Domain to destroy a computer account.

Since you computer isn't in the domain anymore, your domain account will be of no use. You'll need the local administrator account to log-in.

You can always use ERD commander if you have it.

hope this helps

Jeff
