Question

blank window of system restore

Asked by: sbaruah

Hi,
I have noticed that when I open the System restore tool, there opens a window but nothing written within. It is completely blank. The error message that pops up says
"An error has occurred in the script of this page.
Line: 60
Char: 3
Error: Object required
code: 0
url: hcp://system/sysinfo/msinfo.htm"

Also, when I open services tool (Control panel->Administrative tools-> Services), it is partly blank.
The error message says,
"An error has occurred in the script of this page.
Line: 31
Char: 12
Error: Object does not support this property or method
code: 0
url: res://c:\windows\system32\mmcndmgr.dll/views.html"

Could someone help me how can I restore my system back to a previous date? By the way, as far as I remember, I installed (then uninstalled) Microsoft Visual Studio 2003 a few days back. Could it be the reason?
Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks. I checked each of the registry entries mentioned in the above article. They are all ok. Any more ideas?

By the way, while installing Microsoft Visual Studio 2003, the installation asked -whether to modify some system files as they were not compatible with Microsoft Visual studio 2003. And I said yes. Maybe the problem has to do with this.. Any ideas for restoring back is appreciated.

Also have you tried this. Restart windows. Press F8 to get the startup menu. Choose "last known good configuration". Login and check if the same symptoms occur

Thanks.
I have just checked with "Last known good configuration" but with no joy.

Another thing I would like to mention is the name of the error popup. It is named "Internet explorer script error" .

To give some more inputs:

The file jscript.dll in the C:\windows\system32 folder is  of version 5.6.0.8825.

The same file is there in other two folders:
In folder C:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\ -> version 5.6.0.8513
and in    C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386       -> version 5.6.0.8820

Could it be that while installing Microsoft Visual Studio, it installed jscript.dll with the new version 5.6.0.8825 in the system32 folder and this new file does not work when I open System restore tool and get a blank window instead?

How can I overwrite the new jscript.dll file in system32 folder with an older version? (It creates itself). Thanks for your time.

Hi,

Insert XP setup CD in your computer, Open the command prompt (start>run cmd) and write on the command prompt >sfc/scannow . This command will scan all system files and restore them to their original state. You have to reinstall after that all windows update including the service pack

Hi
I did a repair  as you said but the problem was still there. Thanks anyway.
I have just got rid of the problem by uninstalling the latest critical update for Internet Explorer (KB896688).

Thank you all for your responses.

Another solution would be to download/install IE8. I just resolved this issue on my laptop.
