Question

Blue screen on Screensaver powersave

Asked by: pauldonson

Hi,

A bit vague this one but I was hoping someone might have come accross it before.

My PC has recently (for about a month now) started displaying a blue screen. It has happened nearly every day for a month (my PC is on all the time) - BUT it has only happened when the PC is unattended - it has never happened while I have been working on it. I have powersave enabled to switch my monitor off after 10 minutes and I wondered if this was causing the problem. I have tried updating the drivers for my Nvidia GForce 6600 which has made no difference.

The messages on the blue screen vary every time, I have had the IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL one, The PAGE_FAULT one (can't remember the exact wording) and the KERNEL_MODE_TRAP - what does this suggest?

I wouldn't be overly worried but when I switch my PC off from the blue screen there is an alarming scraping noise coming from within (sounds like one of the hard drives) - it doesn't make this noise when I switch off normally or during normal operation. My concern is that the hard disk heads aren't being parked (does that still happen these days?) and the disk(s) will become damaged.

I haven't installed any new hardware or software in the past month so it is all a bit of a mystery. My PC is P4 3.4GHz with 1GB Ram.

Can anyone suggest what might be causing the problems or how I might start to diagnose it?

It sounds like the HDD may be going bad.  Do you have it set to turn off in powersaver settings?

by: cpc2004Posted on 2005-11-05 at 07:19:23ID: 15231013

IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL one is bugcheck code 0A and it is usually caused by bad ram. Run memtest to stress test the ram.

by: pauldonsonPosted on 2005-11-05 at 07:32:11ID: 15231052

tim_qui - I don't have the HDD set to power off. If it is the HDD I need to act quickly as they are out of guarantee soon.

Trouble is the Maxtor utility I have to test drives won't work as I have them in a Raid 0/1 array using the Intel Matrix Storage Utility. Is there an another way of testing the drives? CHKDSK doesn't show any errors (well a few security descriptors, nothing serious).

cpc2004, thanks for tip - I will try memtest overnight.

do you have an adsl modem?

I do indeed have an ADSL modem

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-08 at 02:40:38ID: 15246269

What's the model?

by: pauldonsonPosted on 2005-11-08 at 02:44:56ID: 15246288

Hum, not sure. It is a British Telecom one, blue I think. I will check tonight at home and get back to you.

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-08 at 03:57:23ID: 15246549

Okay then, well, once you've told me the model. I will ask you to do somethings for me okay?

1. Direct yourself to C:\Windows\minidumps
2. Send me the last 5 minidumps here [iq454@otmail.com] as an attachment. Last means (the most recent) So if you have to, order the folder by date.

If you don't have that many, then send what you have.

I'll debug em and see what's causing the problem.

that's [hotmail.com] :) sorry about that typo.

To turn page editor.

My email address is not being used as a means of business, I have to use it because there is no other way for me to get his dumps seeing as EE doesnt allow attachments.

I thank you for your understanding and hope it wont be removed yet.

by: cpc2004Posted on 2005-11-08 at 04:54:53ID: 15246796

The system event 1001/1003 and minidump is the useful debugging information.

Control Panel -> Adminstrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> System -> Event 1001/1003. Copy the content and paste it back here

Zip 5 to 6 minidumps to a zip file and attach it at any webspace. I will study the dump and find out the culprit.

Get public webspace
Go to www.geocities.com - sign up for an account (they are owned by Yahoo - if you have a yahoo account, then you just need to activate the geocities part of it there). Then use their tools to upload the file.

LOL....I got hijacked.

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-08 at 05:08:51ID: 15246857

Yup, then everyone gets the dumps and wants to contribute. Don't you just love EE?

Event viewer is enough, and yet, you still ask for the dumps? lol....

by: pauldonsonPosted on 2005-11-08 at 05:12:29ID: 15246877

Hum, Event viewer is a problem. I cleared it down last time it happened so I knew I was starting afresh. Since disabling the monitor powersave it hasn't blue screened so that does suggest it is the culprit.

ZeropointNRG I will still email you the mini dumps this evening (UK time).

Hi,

The modem is a BT Voyager 100 ADSL Modem.

I have uploaded the minidump files to:

http://www.geocities.com/pauldonson/Mini081005-01.zip

For some reason it has only dumped the last one that happened (I had one on Saturday that Windows noticed and did an error report, normally Windows boots up without even noticing it has BSOD before)

Thanks.

Thrree minidumps are crashed at gwausb.sys. Two minidumps crashed with bugcheck code 7F. The running processes are bittorrent.

Suggestion
1) upgrade device driver gwausb.sys
2) upgrade bittorrent

Okay, this is what to do.

It is your modem drivers as I suspected previously.

You have a DSL 200 modem right? Is it a Revision A or B?  If A, I'm sure you have the latest drivers, you must rollback the drivers to fix it.

Download these for revision A. DSL200v1.11.zip from this site.

http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/drivers/files/modems/dsl200.htm

If you have a revision B modem, you may need to send it back to your ISP and tell them what's up, and also tell them the drivers arent certified for XP. Neither are. If they tell you it doesn't matter, tell them, "the expert said it did".! No questions.

If you don't have this modem, you need to tell me which model you have.

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-08 at 19:20:20ID: 15253601

Sorry, I didnt see that you told me the modem model. :), I will get you the proper drivers in a sec.

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-08 at 19:29:15ID: 15253647

Okay, they don;t have older versions of your drivers. You have the cd right with the newest drivers? Theres two things you can do.

1. Download these for revision A. DSL200v1.11.zip from this site. And extract or copy only the "gwausb.sys" driver, and do a search on your machine for this driver, and replace it.

http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/drivers/files/modems/dsl200.htm

2. Email or call tech support for BT here

http://www.voyager.bt.com/usb100/support.htm

Tell them that your modem is bringing up a BSOD with the driver "gwausb.sys" and that you would like a replacement modem, with certified drivers for XP. Or, tell them if they have older drivers you can rollback to.

Or tell your ISP so they can give you a new modem. It should be free of charge.

Good Luck

By the way, found out what the worrying noise was. My Artic Cooler fan had come loose, clipped it back on and it's fine now!

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-09 at 12:56:55ID: 15260339

Ah good you got it fixed :), had that happen once or twice myself.

by: pauldonsonPosted on 2005-11-10 at 00:35:33ID: 15263561

I reinstalled the Voyager 100 drivers last night and enabled the power save - and guess what BSOD this morning!!! It has been fine all week. I think you are definitely right about that causing the problem. It has been fine all week since I disabled the power save.

by: pauldonsonPosted on 2005-11-14 at 13:48:04ID: 15291338

Nice work, it was the ASDL modem. I decided to get a proper router, got a netgear wireless ADSL modem/wireless router. I had been toying with the idea for a while, just needed to be able to justify it to myself ;-)    (and the other half more to the point!)

Got the excuse I needed!!!

by: cpc2004Posted on 2005-11-14 at 15:20:30ID: 15291993

I wonder why I do the dump ananlysis and identify it is modem driver problem (gwausb.sys). I am the first person to suggest to upgrade the device driver and  I don't get any points.

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-15 at 00:08:12ID: 15293840

Oh cool, lol..good you got it sorted. : )

hey cpc...I was first to ask about his modem (even before the dumps), and I was first to ask for his dumps, till you came along and hijacked me and asked the same question.

Thanks for the points  Paul ; )

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-15 at 00:09:39ID: 15293844

Oh, and you said to update the driver, thats wrong infromation. Their meant to be rolled back...

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-15 at 00:12:32ID: 15293859

Oh, and you also said (upgrade Bittorrent), also wrong information.

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-15 at 00:16:20ID: 15293878

Oh, and you only got the Analysis up before me because I was asleep. But I done my own, and done it properly. No need for upgrading everything and doing a RAM test, OMG...when you can just get the source of it now is there : ). Maybe learn to debug properly and stop hijacking other peoples ideas.

by: cpc2004Posted on 2005-11-15 at 01:00:40ID: 15294008

Points is not important to me as I have enough points for this year. I also help people to resolve blue screen at other free forum. Actually I spend more time at other forum more than here. You can find that I have overr 1000 posts at techspot.com to provide free service to resolve blue screen problem.

Something I want to clarify.

>>>
you only got the Analysis up before me because I was asleep

I don't know when you will analyse the dump. I download the dump from webspace and every experts have the fair chance. I don't take any favorite at this issue.  Base upon my experince bugcheck 0A is usually related to faulty ram.  I recorded every problem that I resolved.  If you refer the blue screen problems at this forum, most experts (nobus, rindi and etc) recommend to run memtest.

I don't understand what you mean. I don't hijack your idea. I base upon the finding from the dump analysis and make recommendation.

I know you from techspot. Props to you there. Im not saying youre point hungry, just stating the fact that I asked first.

I was first to ask for his dumps, if you were first, I wouldnt have even asked since another expert was already on the case. But you tried to nudge me out of the way (hijacked my idea).

Because I have special poewrs. Read from the first post of mine, and you'll see I asked if he had a ADSL modem, before I asked for his dumps.

I buy your idea you have special powers. This is the answer no one can chanllenge you. I hope you can use special power to help people at this forum.

ZeropintNRG

I wonder if I could ask one last favour (I will post a new question if you want)

Having got rid of the BT stuff, my PC just rebooted completely! No BSOD or anything.

Any chance you could have a look at this minidump:

http://www.geocities.com/pauldonson/Mini111605-01.zip

And let me know what has caused it?

Thanks in advance.

Okay, did you install netgear already? This seems to be the problem, uninstall Netgear VPN Client software and check if it happens again, if it does, make sure the stuff you get are always Certified by the OS you're using.

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-16 at 22:54:34ID: 15309633

If you have Mcafee Enterpsirse Software, then the version of the Crypto.sys which takes care of the incompatibility with Mcafee Enterprise software is 3.2.0.8. But the latest versin of the crypto.sys is 3.2.0.24 and the same is a part of their latest release 10.5.1 b8.

by: cpc2004Posted on 2005-11-17 at 00:02:22ID: 15309791

From the minidumps, I find out that you upgrade Crypto recently.  Fallback to old version will fix your blue screen problem.

by: pauldonsonPosted on 2005-11-17 at 00:18:37ID: 15309834

Right that explains it. I have just upgraded my VPN client (It is Juniper Netscreen) - problem is I haven't got the old version (the CD was lost by a colleague!)

I will see how I get on, hopefully it was just a glitch.

Problem with these crashes is that once you have had one they seem to get worse not better.

Thanks for your help, it is very much appreciated.

Just crashed again, need to do some digging...

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-17 at 07:19:24ID: 15311980

Uninstall on of your VNPs, it may be conflicting dlls..

by: pauldonsonPosted on 2005-11-17 at 07:21:57ID: 15312013

I only have one VPN, I have tried reinstalling it. I am just trying to find an updated download of the SafeNet SoftRemote client (I have version 10.3.3 (Build 4)) - I found a 10.5.1 but it wanted my name and address and stuff - something I would prefer not to give. (Although I am licensed to use it)

by: pauldonsonPosted on 2005-11-17 at 07:54:22ID: 15312458

That new version didn't work at all! Mine must be configured to work specifically with Juniper Netscreens.

I have found a crypto.sys file version 3.2.0.24 (min is 3.0.1.18) - do you think it would be OK to install the newer one? If so do I just copy it on top of the old one?

by: cpc2004Posted on 2005-11-17 at 09:02:05ID: 15313213

Maybe you have to change license key for the new version

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-17 at 22:22:40ID: 15317865

yes, just copy it over, all it is is a licensing file. Try just rmoving it even and see if it works..lol :D

by: ZeropointNRGPosted on 2005-11-17 at 22:23:57ID: 15317868

Did you rollback like cpc said?

by: pauldonsonPosted on 2005-11-18 at 00:43:18ID: 15318217

I can't roll back as someone lost the CD to the old version!

So, are you saying I can try deleting the crypto.sys file and see what happens?
