System Restore

I was playing around, trying to rid myself of a few viruses AVG picked up on my machine, and I swtiched system retore off (through my computer), and restarted.

When I came back in the system restore tab was no longer available (for me to switch back on).

In the registry I found disable SR and set the value to 1 (to disable) at which point the tab was available again but with the box checked. When I uncheck it, the tab disappears and I can't run system restore. If I try (by going into computer management) it tells me there is an error 123  the file name, directory name or volume label is incorrect.

Any ideas? Do I even need system restore? My computer has not (to date) shut itself down in the middle of an operation (save for my 2 yr old pressing the off button...)

Can you succeed with an allternate route:

Right click on "My Computer"  >  select properties  >  select system "Restore Tab" > make sure "turn off" is unchecked.

Also, you might try this link:

If it does not contain the specific fix it may link you to one.

No. Once I have changed the registry setting to disable SR, this is the point where the System restore tab becomes visible under right-click my computer (so the system restore tab is visible only when system restore is disabled). As soon as I uncheck that box (turn off), so the system restore is theoretically active, the system restore tab disappears and I cannot set restore points. It comes up with error 123 if I try to go into system restore.

I have checked that link from ms and it doesn't help.

Here are some suggestions for repairing system restore

The last suggestion is to perform a repair install of the system. To answer your last question, it is better to have system restore than not to have it.  It is a safety net.  System restore backs up your system files and your registry.  It does not backup your programs.

Hello,

boyerm25 solution did not work. Nothing up to the repair install on second option worked either - does that mean I am left with no choice but to do a repair install? There no little reg key that just needs adjusting, or a file needs replacing etc that can save me from this sweat-inducing task? I really hate working on the OS. I was considering buying a new hard drive anyway - maybe I should do it now and just load everything fresh onto it...

Derek,

You have found all the registry edits to re-enable System Restore.  That is why I did not post any. You do not have to do the Repair Install if you do not need System Restore.  You said your system runs well.
