IE icon won't show on Desktop

This is a laptop running WinXP Home SP2 with latest updates.  The IE icon refuses to display on the desktop.  I go to Control Panel/Display/Desktop tab/Customize Desktop and check the box to display the IE icon on the desktop but no joy.  The icon does not appear on the desktop and does not show in the Desktop folder.  Any ideas?

Can you find it in Start > All Programs, right-click and go Send to > Desktop (Create Shortcut)?

If it's not in there, you could either browse to the executable (c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE) and make a desktop shortcut from there, or right-click the desktop and create a new shortcut to the exe that way.

Any of those git-er-done?

I can create a shortcut icon, no problem.  But what I want is the IE icon that shows on most systems I've seen that isn't a shortcut.  I don't know what you call it but it shows in the Desktop folder as a System Folder type object.  What I want is an icon on the desktop that when I Right Click/Properties I get the Internet Properties dialog box with 7 tabs.  With a shortcut icon Right Click/Properties gets you the properties for the shortcut.

With IE open, go to Tools > Options > Advanced. Select "Show Internet Explorer on Desktop". Click OK.

Already looked there; this option doesn't exist.  Nor does it exist on another PC running XP Pro SP2 or on another laptop running XP Home SP1.

I'm not too familar with regedit.  Which Value type do I use: String, Binary, DWORD, Multi-string, or Expandable String?

wayneskid, I forgot Windows XP does not have that option in IE Advanced settings.  The registry edit should do the trick.  You use a DWORD.

I'm giving the points to war1.  This laptop belongs to a friend and it's not available to me right now but I'm convinced the regedit trick will work.  I'll do it next week when I have access to the PC.
