Question

Deleting preinstalled AOL software

Asked by: SEEQUEST_ME

I just bought a M45 Laptop. It came with AOL preinstalled. I don't want AOL in my cmputer. I tried to remove using "add and remove programs" but it said "no version was found". However the AOL is still there. What should I do to
remove all files related with this program and do not mess my computer. I've heard that when you unnistall AOL some changing occur in you registry.
Thank you

Greetings, SEEQUEST_ME !

You can manually remove all the AOL files and folders.  Also, look for AOLBACK.exe or AOLBAK.EXE and delete.  If you want to edit your registry, do a similar search in registry and delete. Backup your registry first.

Best wishes!

one simple way of doing this is to actually re-download and re-install AOL from the AOL site. AFter this, go to add/remove programs and uninstall everything with AOL in the name. This may still leave some icons on the desktop and in various places that are shortcuts to the AOL website, but you can just delete these (right click->delete)

Usually, AOL is not installed unless you click on the "Get AOL" Icon on the desktop . . unless you have installed it, you can right click on it and look for the target . . and delete it . . that should get rid of it.

I know that modified versions of IE can sometimes leave parts behind and make upgrades fussy. I wouldn't know of any "clean" ways to remove AOL completely other than formatting.
Re-installing IE may solve it. AOL may have listed as your home page. Delete all cookies temp IE files. Check nine  MSN as it uses AOL as well. Uninstall  ninemsn and when re-installing it check the options.

Disable windows messenger in Oiutlook Express tools.

If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedt, and then click OK.
3. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

4. In the left pane, click the Uninstall registry key, and then click Export on the File menu.

5. In the Export Registry File dialog box that appears, click Desktop in the Save in list, type uninstall in the File name box, and then click Save.

6. Each key listed under Uninstall in the left pane of Registry Editor represents a program that is displayed in the Currently installed programs list of the Add or Remove Programs tool. To determine which program that each key represents, click the key, and then view the following values in the details pane on the right:
DisplayName: The value data for the DisplayName key is the name that is listed in Add or Remove Programs.

-and-

UninstallString: The value data for the UninstallString key is the program that is used to uninstall the program.

7. After you identify the registry key that represents the program that you removed but which is still displayed in the Currently installed programs list of Add or Remove Programs, right-click the key in the left pane of the Registry Editor window, and then click Delete.

Click Yes in response to the "Are you sure you want to delete this key and all of its subkeys?" message.
8. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
9. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.

In the Currently installed programs list, verify that the program whose registry key you deleted is no longer listed.
10. Do one of the following:• If the program list is not correct in Add or Remove Programs, double-click the Uninstall.reg file that you saved to your desktop in step 5 to restore the original list of programs in the registry.

If you have just recently purchased this mahine consider formatting it and start clean if it was previously used by an other.
Cheers Merete

As Simpswr, usually AOL is not installed but is an
added program that the new user may install and
the fact that it does not show up in the
Add/Remove List is evidence that its just
sitting in the AOL Folder on you hard drive waiting to
be installed.  You can also verify that AOL has not been
installed by going either via Windows Explorer or
My Computer into you r Hard Drive Usually its
"local driver (c) and Open up your "Program"
Folder and see if you have an AOL Ver Folder
within your Program Folder, if so, then AOL has been
installed and my guess would be a bad install if it
won't uninstall itself.  If you don't have any such
Folder within the "Program Folder", then it hasn't been
installed and all you need to do is find the
AOL Folder that is on your hard drive but not
within the Program Folder, select it and delete it.
