Question

Internet Explorer desktop icons won't restore (missing)

Asked by: mikethacker

I've taken the typical steps to display the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop (desktop properties>desktop>customize desktop>check Internet Explorer checkbox) and I've opened the desktop cleanup wizard, looked in the Unused Icons folder, and it's not there. I edited the registry to show it, no show. I cleaned all spyare and viruses too.

Greetings, mikethacker !

Go to Control Panel > Display Settings > Desktop tab > Customize Desktop button > Check the Internet Explorer box from Desktop Icons group.

You can create a shortcut of IE executable in the IE Programs Folder and drag the shortcut to the Desktop.

Best wishes!

Sorry, mikethacker!  I notice you have tried the Customize Desktop already.

1. Disable third party extensions. With IE open, go to Tools > Options > Advanced. Uncheck "Third party extensions". Click Ok. Reboot computer.

2. Reset IE settings.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs.  Click on "Reset Web Settings" button. Go to Advanced tab and click "Restore Defaults" button. Go to Security tab and move the bar to Medium or Default. Click OK. Close all browsers. Reboot the computer.

3. Check if a program running in the background is interfering with Internet Explorer. Temporarily disable all Norton programs, including anti-virus, anti-spyware, ad-blocker, win doctor, and recycle bin protect. Disable any firewall or ad-blocker.

Merete, I know that but that isn't with the same features, i.e. right click on the icon and get properties for the browser settings.

AiricR, too late, I deleted the user's profile and when I logged back in the desktop was back to default including the IE icon. I DID delete a bunch of files I did have to get back via Get Data Back, but I did get the desktop straightened out. I TOO AGREE, I think Tweak would have probably been a shot, so, you get the points  :-O
