Failed Windows Update with XP Pro

Hi All

When I click on windows update through start/programs and either select express or custom i receive a Error number: 0x8024402F  and    The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.  But none of them do.   I have put the error number into ask jeaves and it seems to be a common problem but I have been uanbe to locate a solution that actually works.

I have also got through control panel and automatic updates to download updates automatically then prompt me to install them.  This has never happened in the 6 months I have been running XP.  I am sure I am behind with updates.

Any Ideas?

Hi colinauton,

Let's take a look at your system :

Go to http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip and download the file, run and save a log file.

Post the log file at http://www.hijackthis.de/ and click analyse. Post the link to the analysed log in here.

ASKER

look at thi post and try a few of these things

Its something to do with blocking access... have you tried to disable your firewall n that to see if it will work?

Also try this

Also, verify the the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" is started and set to start Automatically. Windows Updates will not run without this service.

Hi Chaps

Thanks for your assistance.  I have diabled firewall (Norton) and made sure that the windows is disabled also.

I have folled both the links and done necessary downloads.  Also checked BIT service and it is set to automatic and already started.

Restarted machine and no difference I am afraid!
there is a file

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

open it. What does it say, is there more error msgs?

It shows the date and time so you will kniow

Thanks
Hi colinauton,

Try two things :

A - Run Ewido :

http://www.ewido.net/en/

Download, Install, Update the Database definitions and do a scan. Post the report in here ...

In no Joy ...

B - Download and Install Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6 :

http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Miguel
I have used Ewido and installed it, and no infected objects were found and I am already running the latest Java

Thanks Colin
