Remote desktop works at home, but not away.

I'm trying to wrap my arms around Remote Desktop, but maybe I don't understand how it works. I have a home-office computer with XP Pro that I've set up as the Remote Desktop client, and a laptop with XP home. My house has a wireless router, and I'm able to access the office computer from the laptop using Remote Desktop. Recently, while visiting my son at his college, I accessed the wireless network available at a local near-campus Jack-In-The-Box restaurant, but when I tried out the Remote Desktop, it couldn't find the home-office computer. I confirmed that the computer was on, with me logged on as user, at the time I attempted the connection. Is there something I need to know about using Remote Desktop from locations other than my home wireless network?

If you are accessing your computer from your home network on your laptop, you can get to it fine, because you are within a private network.

If you are accessing it from the outside, it is a different kind of connection. You will need to open a port on your router or firewall (port #3389) and connect to your home computer with its public IP address (you can find this in your router config page.)

The other option is buying a firewall with VPN access (Linksys has one for about $90) and setting that up, which is more secure than opening a port.
