Question

VPN Error

Asked by: pikeoskar

I created connection:
Network connections > Create new connection > Connect to the network at my workplace > Virtual Private Network connection
I set correct hostname, in SECURITY TAB > IPSec Settings i set correct pre-shared key and in NETWORK TAB i changed
Type of VPN to L2TP IPSec VPN.

When I try to connect to network, it writes "connecting to xxx ..." and after 1 minute it writes:
"Error 678: The remote computer did not responded. For further assistance click More Info or search Help and Support ..."

My colleague successfully connect with the same settings.

PLEASE HELP - where can be a problem?? How to connect VPN?

I Use Windows XP Service pack 2 with latest updates.

Sounds like firewall on the network blocking the connection.

The PIX crypto map was not working.   Cisco determined that the new crypto stuff for the new location was "hung".  The problem was solved by resetting the PIX.  Weird to say the least.  Many hours invested in what turns out to be an unusual problem.
This solved a problem in the past for another expert

First, you should check whether you can get any reply from your service provider with the Dial-Up Connection Setup application provided with the protocol:

1: Click the Start button on the taskbar and select Run... to bring up the Run dialog box.

2: Type RASPPPOE in the edit field and click the OK button to run the Dial-Up Connection Setup application.

3: If the application quits with an error message, follow the advice it gives.

4: A dialog box comes up with a combo box labeled Query available PPP over Ethernet Services through Adapter: at the top. Select the network adapter your broadband modem is connected to from the list. If the protocol is only operating on one network adapter, the box will be grayed out as there is no choice to make.
5: Click the Query Available Services button. If an error message is displayed, continue here for further help.

6: If the list view shows one or more offered services and you had tried to connect to a specific Service and/or Access Concentrator, make sure the one you had tried to connect to is listed. If you find your service provider has changed the Service Name and/or the Access Concentrator name, simply create a new connection with the new name(s) or edit the Phone number field in your existing dial-up connection accordingly.
7: Click the Exit button to quit the application.

If you do not want to connect to a specific Service and/or Access Concentrator, make sure the Phone number field of your dial-up connection really only contains a single zero digit.
