XP Repair Problem

Yesterday my daughter had a problem with Itunes and couldn't update her Ipod. Some file had become corrupt. I thought no problem, I'll just use System Restore and go back to the previous days restore point.

I ran System Restore and it looked like it was fixing some Itunes files, so I thought cool!  Then it rebooted the PC and that's when my real problems started. The screen went black after the logo splash screen and hung. Nothing on the screen (no cursor, text, or mouse/keyboard comtrol. Not even the num/caps lock lights would come on)

I rebooted and selected a different XP installation from the boot menu and logged in using that. I checked the C drive and could access all the files. So I backed up the Documents and Settings folder to a different drive.

I tried booting into safe mode and tried all the different optons there. Same result, Black Screen hang. I also tried to use the Recovery Console. It asked for the installation to log into and I selected C:\Windows and logged on with the admin password. Then I ran "chkdsk /r".  It ran and said it fixed some things but when I rebooted, it has the same problem. I also used BOOTCFG / SCAN and it found all of the installations including C:\Windows.

I thought I'd try to Repair the installation, so I booted with the CD, hit Enter, F8, and get to the place to enter R to repair the installation, BUT the one I need to repair (C:\Windows) isn't in the list. Only the F:\Windows installation shows up.

Now I'm stuck.  Is there anyway to FORCE the C:\Windows installation to show up in the list?  My search for articles mentioned that if it's not in the list, it is corrupt and can't be repaired. I really didn't want to do a clean install and have to install all of the other apps and software again.


Is there a way to run SFC /SCANNOW from a different drive to check system files on C:? Anything else I can try?
