Question

What is the best spyware program? Can I get two or three? I can spend $30-40 each

Asked by: ralphwalkerdj

I want to get the best spyware program possible.   I went to a site that says Aluria's Spyware Eliminator is the best.  Adaware was #7.   I'm guessing you can't go wrong with any of the top five, right?     Second, just to be safe, is it a good idea to have two programs?
What about virus programs?   McAfee? Norton? or is there a sleeper?

FINALLY, AND THIS IS HUGELY IMPORTANT, THUS, THE RELATIVELY HIGH POINT VALUE:   I run very, very CPU intensive programs (music) that cannot be compromised in the middle of a session. I cannot afford to have any other program running on it's own, taking CPU/RAM space, etc.   I want a program that can't even sneeze unless I give it permission to!!!  No update announcements; no automatic scans...

I'll answer this part for you.  If this is a mission critical machine, take it off the network.  That is your sure fire way of nothing infecting your system.  Get an alternate computer to do your Internet communications.

My favorites . . AdAware . . Spybot, S&D and the Microsoft Antispyware ( now called Windows Defender)

When I do video rendering . . I disconnect from the internet and turn off all antispyware and antivirus programs to avoid a glich . . Even asking for permission can steal cpu cycles . .

http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/adawareSE_setup.htm

1st Install, run it and Update it.
Then put in these Configuration settings before scanning.
Click on the configuration Windows button.
Click on Scanning, and choose the following settings to:
Scan within archives
-"Scan active processes,
Scan registry
Deepscan registry
scan my IE Favourites for banned URL's
scan my host's file
Then click on Tweaks, go to "Cleaning engine" and set it to:
Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion
Let Windows remove files in use after reboot.
Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.

Click on the "Scan Now" button.

The only time you are going to see much usage in your Processor is when you initiate a scan.
I'll check out the ratings you mentioned, but I've always considered this one of the top three.
Plus, you can't beat the price.
Good Luck

F-Secure Internet Security has the Ad-aware integrated in their product, so it's an easy all-in-1  anti-virus, firewall & anti-spyware .
You can even disable it whenever necessary to make sure it doesn't interfere - I totally agree with the first comment, you shouldn't
have your mission critical machine on the network, at least when you're actually doing your music.

Oh, and F-Secure can be found at www.f-secure.com  .  There's a free trial available.

For antivirus, stay AWAY from Norton, it brings systems to their knees.
NOD32 has a pretty low impact on systems
http://www.nod32.com/products/nt.htm

I'd only use one AV program, but several spyware ones.
SpyBot
AdAware
Webroot Spysweeper,
and M$ Defender
in that order get my vote.

Some performance tips:

I would agree with danch99 about Norton. Its very heavy on the system. McAfee is good and pretty stable, effective and yet not heavy on resources. You should never have more than one AV on the system, and you should never have anything less two anti-spyware program. Ad-Aware, MS defender and Spybot are free and good. Webroot and Spyware Doctor are paid but again good.
Regarding performance, you could try tweakui for Xp.

Hope this works for you!
Do let me know the results or if you need further assistance...

Carpe Diem!
