Question

How to Awake PC from Standby

Asked by: spoowiz

I would like the PC to wake up from standby mode when LAN activity occurs.
I tried:
Go to Device Manager -> Select you ethernet card -> Enable the wake-on-lan in power management and advanced settings...
and then tried to access the PC from another PC on a hub. (Couldn't find the PC).

What else do I need?
Thanks

Make sure your NIC is wake on LAN compatible.  If it is, double check that the BIOS is configured properly to allow wake on LAN activity.

Right Click Network Neighborhood, Properties
Right Click Local Area Connection, Properties
Click on the Configure Button for your network card
Click on Power Mgmt tab.
The option is there to allow the network card to bring a pc out of standby.

There is a program that will let you wake up your computer, called Wake-on-LAN, if it is in standby or hibernation.  The built-in windows feature doesn't always work.

The program is free from Solarwinds.  You just need the IP address and MAC address, and you can send a 'wake-up' signal.  It even works if the computer is off, if you have wake-on-lan enabled in the computer BIOS (disabled by default on most computers.)

If you are doing this from an outside network, there is a UDP port you need to open on the router...forgot which port though.

netsmithcentral - pc is about 2 years old. don't know if its wake on lan compatible
yesplease - did what you said. didn't work.
vectorform - went to bios configuration. didn't see wake-on-lan option.
perhaps, my pc is not WOL compatible? it's a dell pc

Check the network card settings, and look for a setting having to do with remote wake up, or power on when network activity.  The setting is there, you just have to find it.

Ok, what's the make and model of the PC.  Any extra info will help with the resolution, ie network card make/model etc

YesPlease correctly explained how to enable Windows Wake-On-LAN.  I am explaining how to enable it on the BIOS level.  While YesPlease's directions were correct, the BIOS setting overrides Windows (if the BIOS setting is disabled and Windows enabled, it will still work for standby and hibernation - if the BIOS setting is enabled, the Windows setting can be disabled and it does not matter.)

Here are instructions:

Configuring Wake-On-LAN

BIOS Settings

The Wake-On-LAN functionality is generally disabled by default. The option to enable Wake-On-LAN is different with each computer manufacturer. The most common method adopted across different PC's are as follows:

   1.  During the computer’s power-on self-test enter the BIOS setting screen by pressing the F1, INS, or DEL keys.
   2.  Select Power settings. Check for Power Up Control.
   3.  Enable settings related to Power Up on PCI card, LAN, or Network.
   4.  Click Save and exit the BIOS settings.

I still can't find the option in BIOS.
In any case, I've done the "local area connection" properties portion and now acting strangely.
I usually put the PC in standby mode at night. The last 2 nights, even with all the other PCs on the network off, this PC starts waking up. I don't care for that behavior. So I'm abondoning this "project".
I'm awarding the points to participants for trying (and the answers are probably correct).
Thanks guys.

You might not have a network card that supports it, in which case you would need a new card, or a wake-on-lan adapter for the current card...not sure where to get those though.  Sorry to hear it didn't work out.
