.asx file will not stream Windows Media File automatically in IE

If I click on a link on a web site that is linked to an .asx file it does not play the WMF automatically. It opens a prompt box which only allows me to save or cancel the .asx file download. It doesn not even allow me to run or open the file. If I save the .asx file and click on it, it sreams the movie fine. I want it to play automatically. Also in the d/l window it sates that the default program used to open this file cannot do so. However, when I try this in Firefox the file plays fine without having to save it. I tried all the steps in this link and they did not work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried re-installing WMP?  Do you have version 10?  I find that WMP has lots of quirks that can be solved with a reinstallation.  That and try to reset the defaults on your Internet Options screens in IE.

OK, to reply to mslunecka, I did what you said and uninstalled Window Media Player and reinstalled and it still does the same thing. I will now try EE33 's suggestion.

OK, so EE33 solution wasn't quite correct but it lead me to it which is, to make Windows Media Player the default player in the Set Default Access and Programs option from the Add/Remov Programs menu. I dont know why this has to be like this because you would think that I have the .asx file associated with WMP and it should just recognize it. So, I will award the points to EE33 for leading me down the right path.
Set Default Access and Programs

You mean "Set Program Access and Defaults" that thing
I always delete off the start menu! Oops.

If you want a great codec pack, get the "k-lite mega codec pack"
then you can play any video format.
