Question

Error Code: 0x643 trying to install netframeWork 1.1

Asked by: Lester_and_Julie

I was trying to install the ATI CAT Driver 6.3 with netframework 1.1 and got this error code....Error Code: 0x643. I called Dell Tech support and they told me that it was already on my computer and that i did not need it. But i do not see it in my add/remove programs. Ati says i have to have it for the new drivers. On Windows Auto updates it trys to update to 1.1 and it gives the same error. How do i install netframework on my PC?

Take Care,

Lester Davis

Instead of using Windows Update, dowlnload the full Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&displaylang=en

Then try running the download with the following command...
dotnetfx.exe /t:%temp% /c:"msiexec.exe /fvecms %temp%\netfx.msi"

If that doesn't work, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\.NETFramework\1.1 in regedit and delete any keys named.....
M827821028, M827822052, M827821042, M827821036, M827821031, M827821041, M841510 and M823641 if they exist.

Then try running the install again.

The first one almost worked. It started the process but stopped before the error message. The second one i got as far as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates........but did not see anything that looked like .NETFramework. Is there any other thing i can try? If not, do i need to have .netframework on my computer. If there is a way to get around it for the new ATI Drivers i would.....that is the main reason i was trying to install the netframework.....cause Ati is going away from the old control panel to the C.C.C. Which needs .NetFrameWork to work. Any suggestions?

Take Care, Lester Davis

One suggestion I've seen is to stop the Windows Installer service in services.msc, then try running Dotnetfx.exe.

It could be possible that a corrupt or partial previous install of .Net is getting in the way.
If you have a Windows XP CD, run setup.exe from the Support\Tools folder to install the Windows Support Tools.
Once installed, try running C:\Program Files\Support Tools\msicuu.exe.
See if Microsoft .NET framework is listed in there, and if so, select it and hit Remove.
When done, reboot, then try installing .NET again.

Do you NEED .NET? I wouldn't say you need it, but more and more programs are using it (like your ATI drivers). And no, there is no way to make something designed with .NET to work without it being installed. So, if you want the newer drivers, then yes you do need .NET installed.

I will try what you said in the post above. This problem i am having do you think that is why i can not check my hard disk for errors. When i try it says it can not open volume. I was just wondering if they are two in the same problem.

Lester Davis

What kind of message does chkdsk give you?
Is it "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"
If so it just means Windows is using the volume, If you say yes it should check the drive and fix errors at the next reboot.

After reboot it says windows has finished checking disk and can not open volume for direct access. Takes about 2 seconds. It use to take a couple of hours to check  the hard disk for errors.

Hmm, yeah it sounds like something else is going on. Are there any errors in the system log in event viewer? Especially anything relating to disk?

Experts Exchange allows a maximum of 500 pts for any question, so no you can't raise it to 1000. However, at this point it might be a good idea to make a new question with a pointer to this one. By now this has fallen back a ways in the list and you probably won't get many other "experts" to look at it.

At this point unfortunately I'm leaning towards trying "SFC /SCANNOW" from the command prompt, and if that doesn't help, backup data and do a clean fresh reinstall of XP. Depending on how much data and programs you'd have to backup and reinstall, it might end up taking less time to continuing trying to track this down. If you do post a pointer question to this one, maybe someone else will take a look and have some ideas.

What does this do? "SFC /SCANNOW". I started to reformat and do a clean install but hit the R for repair instead of clean install. I think i may just not wory about .netframework. But you have been very helpful and i have learned a good bit from you so i think i will take your advice and start a new question. But since you have helped me, not nessilty solve my problem but helping me understand a lot of things about my computer i think i will close this question out, award you the points and regroup see how my computer acts and start fresh with a new set of questions. Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks for the points, and good luck!

SFC is System File Checker, a part of Windows XP that will scan system files and try to restore any corrupt or modfied ones.
