Automatically Backup USB drive

After having to dismantle a colleagues's usb thumb drive and use linux to recover the data (Windows had no clue) after a mysterious failure, I've decided that somebody else must have experienced similar problems and written some kind of automatic backup program.  I'm looking for a  program that runs hidden in the background, and automatically backs up preselected USB drives whenever they are connected to the system.
