DVD & Windows Media Player Issue

I recently had 2 DVD's professionally made and when I try to play them, the program crashes. Windows Media Player opens properly but when I click on the program to play, Media Player shuts down. I brought the disks to another PC and they work just fine - just not on mine.
The disks are DVD-R and my writer is a new HP DVD 740b that is supposed to read most formats, including -R and +R. Any ideas on what gives? All my MS software, including XP Home, is up-to-date.
