Question

Restore the entire system

Asked by: cybeh

Hi,

May I know how can we create a "restoration" CD like Dell? It will let us inset the CD, and just click on the "restore" button, then it will restore the entire system back to the original stage.
I know ghost is one of the options...but is there any other solution? Prefer a free solution?

And we do have Microsoft OEM Preinstallation Kit as well, will that help?

Please Advice.

The way this is done by dell and other companies is by editing certain files inside the install the easiest way is to use NLITE to create the custome
!386 folder with all the tweaks and drivers and updates you want on the that computer and then placing that folder in a drive and editing the boot.ini folder to point toward the setup.exe file.  The guide is here http://www.nliteos.com/guide/
the download is here http://www.nliteos.com/download.html it is a great tool.

You already mentioned Ghost.  The other popular commercial XP imaging backup/restore product is Acronis True Image (www.acronis.com).

There are two currently-free backup/restore imaging products that I'm aware of:

Drive Image XML

Myself used this guide to install Windows XP http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/ and this for the applications http://www.appdeploy.com/

1. Create first a basic winnt.sif with "SysPrep Deployment tools" (find with google)
2. Edit your winnt.sif using the reference help file to tweak your settings.
3. Copy it to a floppy or in the i386 folder on the CD.
4. Use Virtual PC to try the ISO cd before burning to CD (If it's a DVD mount it with Daemon-Tools and then choose the DVD-drive in Virtual PC)

All the god reading is on the above links.
