Hello bivvyman!
<Question how can i change the second hard drive from C to D.>
Have you already installed the operating system on the new/replacement drive? And, is it a master" driver?
<The damaged hard drive - can i temporarily put into D and retrieve data from it or is this wishfull thinking?>
It's possible, it depends on what the damage is, physical or logical, and whether or not the data is in a recoverable state.

You will need to format and partition the second drive in order to begin using it (if you havent already)
Goto Start Run > diskmgmt.msc and you will see the drives listed. If you rligth click on a drive you will see the option "CHANGE DRIVER LETTERS AND MAPPINGS" your going ot have great problems doing this on c: if your botted off it as its the system partition.
From here you should also be able to create a NTFS partition on your new drive and once formatted it will show up in My Computer.
