Question

how can I restore my HP laptop from HD with out the disks

Asked by: wanda

Hi,
I just got a used HP laptop, it's less than a year old, and I want to reformat and restore it back to factory new preset.

(XP SP2) I can log in as guest, and see Restore is on the D drive.

How can I access the restore drive to get it started? anybody.

looking on the HP support, it showed pressing F11 at start up, but that does nothing.
it is a pavilion dv1000.

I have no admin password and no recovery disks.

And you can't get the admin password?  You could always download and run the  Offline NT Password & Registry Editor found at this page http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm

Can you get into Safe Mode?

mtz1of4,
thanks, I got past the password problem, now I'm loged in as an admin. but I see no way to get the Restore going from D drive, or to create the back up disks.

bcaronongan,
thanks, that site was no help, it says "press the  F10 key repeatedly until a recovery menu appears", but F10 opens the BIOS setup.
in "all programs" I have no "HP Tools".

yes, I can get into safe mode.

You may actually have to purchase the OS. or system restore disks from HP.

Do a Search of your hard drive for System Recovery.  According to HP, you should have a link to PC Recovery in the folder. You may have to "Show System Files and Folders" in the Folder Options of the Control Panel.

This may be the correct path c:\windows\creator\creator.exe  Open the My Computer and scroll through the C: Drive for it.

This is suppossed to start the Recovery Disk Creation program.

We can try one more thing, Go to Start->Run and type cmd and hit Enter. The command window will open.

1. Type cd c:\ at the prompt and press the Enter key.
2.  Type cd windows at the prompt and press the Enter key.
3.  Type cd creator at the prompt and press the Enter key.
4.  Type the following command exactly as it is shown here (including quotation marks and space): "CD Creator.exe".
5.  Click Start Creation and follow the directions to create the Recovery CD set.

I finally found it.
incase some one else is searching for this later.

it was a hidden file in D:\HP_Recovery\MiniNT\System32\start.exe

after I clicked that start.exe file open, a message came up that said somthing like "getting the drive ready", and then I was able to reboot and make the F11 key work.
after that it was a breeze, no disks needed. :)
thanks
