The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Is this the old can't run a DOS prog issue? Here is the standard response. (If it isn't, be more specific).....

This is a common XP error. It indicates that one or more of the following files are missing or corrupt from C:\Windows\System32.

autoexec.nt
command.com
CONFIG.NT

Replace them with copies from a working system (they are the same on all standard systems), or extract them from your Windows CD.

You may have to use the rather involved procedure referenced in this Microsoft article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545
How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry that Prevents Windows XP from Starting

This page has, perhaps, a more understandable treatment of the above article:

09.22.2006 at 07:02AM PDT, ID: 17577612
I get the message upon boot up on a Dell system XP HE OEM I can't perform a repair from the Dell OS CD

09.22.2006 at 07:23AM PDT, ID: 17577760

Rank: Genius

Can you give more detail about the message you receive?  Is it something like:
"Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD."?  If so, then you need to slipstream SP1/SP2 into the XP installation CD.  See this page for a VERY complete treatment of performing a repair install:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

09.22.2006 at 07:27AM PDT, ID: 17577803
I am not in front of the PC at the current moment. but it states windows can't start, won't boot.

09.22.2006 at 07:33AM PDT, ID: 17577836

Rank: Genius

But is this when you are trying to boot normally (when, I understood, that you get the message about the missing or corrupt registry hive called SYSTEM), or when you are trying to do a repair, with the XP CD inserted (and, possibly, with the BIOS altered so that the primary boot device is the CD rather than the hard drive)?

09.22.2006 at 07:39AM PDT, ID: 17577880
Boot normally, there is no repair xp option on the Dell supplied  OS CD

09.22.2006 at 07:53AM PDT, ID: 17578003

Rank: Genius

So then you have followed the instructions on the michaelstevenstech page, and you end up at this point:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#warning2

All I can suggest is what he does at that point on his page, and that includes the procedure listed in my first comment to your question, i.e., what is under the heading "Windows XP Crashed?".  (But Michael gives a couple of other things to try first.)

Ok to save time I was going to doa batch file, but pc has no floppy, cd and usb. Can I use a usb drive? Save a *.txt and run the batch from there?

09.22.2006 at 11:19AM PDT, ID: 17579541

Rank: Genius

Not sure what batch file you're talking about, but you should be able to run it from a USB drive.  But if you create your batch file with Notepad, for example, make sure you save it with a .bat file extension, and include the entire file name within quotation marks, so that Notepad won't put another extension of .txt on the end...

09.22.2006 at 12:17PM PDT, ID: 17579947
Can I use a usb drive in recovery console?

09.22.2006 at 01:59PM PDT, ID: 17580735
try to put the win xp cd in the drive and go:
start menu->
run->
and write "sfc -scannow"...
this command will search for deleted os files and it will rewrite them back...
