Too many programs in start up

I have 23 items in the start up menu ,which I believe are slowing my computer. Can I simply uncheck these items in
start up to prevent them from running in the background all the time. Some of these are pinger, CPATR, CePMTray,
CeEKey,atiptaxx, Ati2mdxx,Apoint. Is there any software to manage startup?

Click the button to hide Microsoft signed process, then yes, you can uncheck any startup process.

You can use Startup Manager to manage startups

Unless you have Win2000, you can use msconfig to disable any yuo do not want ( non of those are neeced )

Click Start . . Run . . type 'msconfig" ( without the "'s )  click on the Startup tab and uncheck anything you do not want to run at startup.

You might also want to take a real hard look at everything you have installed (Control Panel/Add Remove Programs) and uninstall anything you don't really need.
A lot of times we install neat looking stuff we find and forget that it is still there.

Too many program default install themselves to 'start' on boot up or log on.

Holding down the shift key whilst logging on to Windows XP will stop anything in the Startup folder from running. This should quickly establish if any of the programs here are causing the problem. You can then just start them one by one to see which one might be casuing the problem.

As simpswr says, msconfig can also be used which will allow control over programs that start up automatically in other ways (there are many!) which may be slowing things down.
