Question

(URGENT!!) The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted create (500 pts)

Asked by: mehul_kar

PLEASE READ THE QUESTION CAREFULLY:

i have 2 drives on my pc: (C:) and (D:)
both have windows xp home edition installed.

Drive C is the default boot drive. when i start my computer it asks which OS i want to load. i select the C: one.
recently i had some virus problem and i had to use my xp cd to repair the os on (C:). now when i boot from that drive, the logon screen appears, and there is only a guest account. when i try to click it, it asks for a password. i tried some: "admin", "blank" "guest" and also tried leaving blank. every time, it comes up with the following message:

The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
please try again or consult your system administrator.

i can still boot from drive (d:), and my files on drive (c:) are intact.

how can i make another user account in the OS on (c:) through the os on drive (d:)??

or is there any other way to solve this??

PLEASE HELP.

The easiest is to reinstall the OS and applications on drive C.   Booting up on drive D XP cannot create accounts on drive C.

Have you tried

"Administrator" (no quotes, case sensitive) and NO PASSWORD?

by: younghvPosted on 2006-10-08 at 13:06:44ID: 17687174

With XP Home, the true 'Administrator' account is only functional when in 'Safe Mode'.
Re-boot and tap the F8 key during the boot cycle.
The password for the 'Administrator' account is probably blank (unless you set one during install).

Once in safe mode, you can create additional accounts.

Post back for any other questions.

Tap the F8 key, then select 'Safe Mode' when the menu appears.

i tried "Administrator". same result.

i tried booting (C:) in safe mode. the logon screen showed "Administrator" account and no guesta account. the administrator also had a password which i couldn't figure out. same results.

i don't know what else to do. i have tried everything.
please help. this is urgent.
the only thing possible now seems to be to format (C:) and install again. but i have a lot of data that needs to be backed up.

is there ANY OTHER SOLUTION?? please help thanks

You could use a tool like the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor to reset the "Administrator" password...

Or, as an alternative solution, you could boot your system utilizing either ERD Commander or BartPE.  They will allow you to copy your critical files from the "C" partition to an external USB drive, allowing you to format and reload as you see fit...

Troubleshooting versus reinstallation..

Faster on the reinstall...(backup your data first)

Well it sounds like your SAM file is dead in the water how exactly did you "repair" this drive did you use the windows repair option or how?  sounds like you messed with the registry and copied it over from the c:\repair folder and now you dont have the default accounts that came with the system being read so now you cant get back in.  Does any of this sound like what you did?  Did you have system restore turned on for this partition if you did you can go back to repair console and fix it I just really need to know how you "repaired" it

thank you very  much but i figured out my own problem. thank you again. i just copied files to (D:) by booting from (D:) and reformatted and installed windows again.

now i have one last question. i delted the windows folder from (D:) and the (Documents and settings folder also, but every time i start up, it still asks me which OS i want to load.
how do i get rid of this without reofrmatting (D:) , which is not an option.

thanks

you need to modify the boot.ini

by: irwinpksPosted on 2006-10-09 at 09:37:53ID: 17691739

right click on MY COMPUTER, choose PROPERTIES, ADVANCE tab, then click on SETTINGS in Startup and Recovery, click EDIT, then remove the OS that you don't need.. make sure it is the correct one before you save.

cool. thank you!

by: mehul_karPosted on 2006-10-09 at 16:37:52ID: 17694660

i gave points to irwinpks first answer because i ended up reinstalling and formatting the os anyway. and the last one because i couldn't find the actual boot.ini file and he me how to modify it.

thanks for all your time though

Thanks again.. in the future...its always the fastest to reinstall should things go awry..you may spend a finite number of hours versus the endless troubleshooting.
